From my memory of the former Gateway 'up north', it was I think a Fine Fare before that. It closed down before it became Somerfield though.

There was also a branch of Fine Fare in Ashton Lane where Ashoka / Iceland is now. I remember going into it through plywood corridors during subway modernisation, which I think is what killed it.

Chimmy's was also used a filmset for the first episode of Tutti Frutti. It also specialised in selling Mezcal tequilla - the one with the worm in it.

They had little brass plaques on the wall at the bar with the names of those who drank the mezcal and ate the worm. "Worm eaters club" IIRC. I dont think they put up a brass plaque every time though...although that could explain the company's financial difficulties.

I noticed the other day, the brass 'COOPERS' sign embedded in the pavement outside has been party covered by the adhesive bumps they put at pedestrains crossings for the partially sighted. I wouldnt worry about it being covered for long as move of those squares of bumps don't last for long and peel up in bits.

My first paid employment was in Chimmy Chungas when it was still a Fine Fare (that wasn't yesterday).
I think I was sixteen or something .. hated it with a passion. I'm not wired for retail.

You have got to love it or it shows, hence the amount of poor service around.
