There are quite a lot of vents. Although I would suspect there to be a few on account of all the electrical stuff needing cooled. The underground ones seem to have vents as seperate structures, but I suppose if the building was constructed in the 40s it might have seemed more sensible to include them in the building design.

An interesting addendum is the bt building in Renfield Street, opposite the rear gates of the STV studios and between the Pavilion and the Savoy Centre. At least I think it's a BT building.

It looks like the rear of a 60s/70s office block, except it is the front. There's no indication from the outside what the building is, no windows on the ground floor and only one very secure looking door. Looks fairly heavily reinforced on ground level as well.

I noticed that as well Jay about the seperate vent structures... but there are "hunners"! Something else Iv just realised I didnt mention is that before the roof structured was covered in that blue corrugated iron it was possible to see these vents running along the length of the north and south facades.

There are also a multitude of BT/exBT buildings in the Dial House vicinity let alone Glasgow (The Pinnacle, the one on Waterloo St that was just demolished (?), Telephone House, Westergate (hissssssss  ), Alexander Bain). There are a few un-marked BT buildings still around so its quite possible that is a BT building in Renfield St.

Iv got an arial pic but dont know how to put it on properly
... Il ask Sharon!

Hmmm, could well be. I wouldn't think that a building designed in the 40's would be that concerned about air conditioning that it would need so many vents. Incorporating them into the building design would be a good way of distracting any attention.

I suppose though it depends on the heat generated by the equipment it was originally intended to house.

All those BT buildings around the city centre - I guess it wouldn't be unthinkable that they could be connected underground. It certainly would make sense in terms of cabling.

Can't say how I know for fear of repremand - but I know! The tunnel actually runs from there to the junction of Cathedral Street + North Hannover Street.

The small building next to the Buchanan Galleries carpaprk - on the corner - used to be only Iron Cladding. However BT were asked by the city council to try and make it blend with the rest of the Galleries building.

That little building there is actually only a lift saft - housing a vehicle caipable lift down to the tunnel. Down there BT (apperently) have modified corporate glf cats to drive up and down in. FUN!

I don't know if it goes any furthere than Dial Houe - the Lift Shaft but I do know it is there!

Am I reading this thread right? You're saying theres a tunnel from the
corner of Cathedral St and North Hanover St all the way to Bothwell St? :?

Presumably it passes beneath the Queen St Low Level lines and the subway?

The BT Tunnel!

Postby tip2tail » Mon Feb 09, 2004 6:25 pm

In short - Aye!

Some tunnel eh?

Thats one the reasons why there is the lift shaft. If anyone is around the corner of North Hannover Street and Cathedral Street in the next few days you can look into the building because not a day goes by without the roller shutters being up at some time just now. Then you will see the lift. :D

As for the Renfrew Street building between the Pavilion and the Savoy Centre - it is a BT building too. It main function is just a standard exchange - however - it does perform one other main function - i dont know what that is though!

What, there's genetically engineered life forms down there, mutated from feline stock?!

And they can DRIVE?!

Aww! So they don't exist?
Damn :'( I wanted to touch their fuzzy little GELF ears...
*Ahem* so yeah...

Think I might have a wander by this tunnel at some point this week.
I wonder if I can use my "Looking to lease a site for Airsoft" to get some photos of places that others might not be able to access? Money talks, they say!

Yes, I have seen inside many times - it's often open in the mornings. I also
recall it before it was incorporated into that eyesore of a shopping centre
when it was just a corrugated structure.

Air vent

Postby ping » Tue Feb 10, 2004 1:45 pm

Check out the air vent cunningly disguised as a telephone exchange box next to it as well. Its just a wee one and its painted blue.
