Let Glasgow Flourish- Coat Of Arms

Here's the bird that never flew
Here's the tree that never grew
Here's the bell that never rang
Here's the fish that never swam

All supposed to refer to miracles allegedly performed by St. Kentigern. Sounds like a kids' poem to me, maybe for mnemonic purposes or perhaps used as a skipping rhyme.

There's a nice one on the Pinkston Power Station plaque. Wouldn't mind this in my living room :)

The old plaque which is no longer displayed in Shettleston Halls but is kept by the Caretaker.

Shettleston Library - this one could have been used in the signs topic as it is one of the old District Council signs.

Here's an interesting thing. According to Rampant Scotland the city didn't have a coat of arms until 1866 and the Victorians truncated the motto to 'Let Glasgow Flourish'

However the Olympic Circus took place in Ingram St in March 1804 and in addition to such treats as Mrs Short and Mr Sibley on the tightrope, Mr Crossman taking a surprising leap over a stage of boards and Mr Short (presumably Mrs Short's man) playing select airs on the musical glasses the Glaswegian crowd were to be entertained with fireworks on wheels and in particular firing no.5 would indicate we had a coat of arms with Let Glasgow Flourish long before 1866.

Image

It's comforting to watch the 'youtube' movies of the crowds watching the paint fireworks at Toryglen and realise nothing really changes!

Now that I think on it, I'm sure theres a stained glass version of the Glasgow Arms hanging above the main desk of Shettleston Library, did you have a look in when you were there Alex?

I was in there but didn't really look about so will need to make another visit. As it is just along from my work it shouldn't be a problem.
