Funny TV ads, past and present

Postby scotia47 » Tue May 11, 2004 10:02 pm

I've been thinking about all the TV ads that we've seen over the years. some were good, some bad, some really bad, and some were absoloute works of genius. Here are some of my favourites, in no particular order:

1. The new Irn Bru ads, which have been starting to appear again over the last week or two. They proved controversial when they first appeared, but I love them. My favourite is the one with the boy getting cans of Irn Bru from his friends in exchange for them getting a peak at his mum in the shower. Probably cos of the extremely dirty mind I have. :twisted: Moving on...

2. This was a while back. It was an advert for Ambrosia Creamed Rice, featuring a Devon farmer singing to the tune of a Pet Shop Boys song (I think), don't know its name. The chorus was "Ooh arr, it's Ambrosia!" Quality.

3. A bit more recent. The John West advert with the guy fighting a bear over a salmon. Who didn't love that one?

4. That Mint card advert with the woman remembering an ex-boyfriend with an unusal nose. It's been on a lot so most of you will probably know what happens.

What's everyone else's favourite funny TV ads, past or present?

Not quite an advert, but some of the Public Information Films had me in stitches ("Charlie says" etc) althought the daddy of them all had to be the one where the old dear had to change a bulb in her living room but chose to use a chair instead of "proper steps". The result is "she" ( a guy built like Hulk Hogan but dressed as her for the stunt) crashes dramatically through a glass cabinet....hilarious stuff!! You can find it on

It's under "Public info films" then "s-z" in that category. :wink:

A whole great wodge of them are available on DVD. It's great. Featuring among others:

The Rolf Harris swimming one;

The cast of Dad's Army demonstrating how to use a pedestrian crossing;

The "Frisbee caught in an electric pylon" one;

Alvin Stardust demonstrating road safety. There's a Kevin Keegan one as well "You kids must be out of your tiny minds!"

Fantastic. Nostalgia, ye cannae beat it.

Know what is odd / spooky ?

Just as someone mentions 'Charly Says' advert I am watching the video for 'Charly Says' by the prodigy!!! And laughing my ass off at it.

But, disturbingly....

When I do a GIS for 'Charly Says' or 'Mummy when you go off somewhere' I can't find a SINGLE picture of the plucky, un-intelligable feline.

Anyone any pics ? Photoshops in the making! :D

Thanks DR!

Oh yeah, I should make it clear that I was laughing at the video not because I don't like it but because it's funny.

And it brings back so many memorys... Prestwick Airport rave, the recovery room, being so smashed I didn't know which direction was vertical; and hey, it didn't matter.

;-)
