Odeon RIP....

Postby gap74 » Thu Jan 05, 2006 1:29 am

Just a wee reminder folks that, despite having been a tatty fleapit for some years now, the old Odeon in Renfield St shuts its doors for the last time on Saturday night, so if you have any desire to mark the old lady's passing by visiting one last time, best get a move on!

Plans I've heard are large basement grocery retailer, various smaller pubs and restaurants at ground and first floor level, such as Nando's Chickenland, and a large nightclub on the upper floor, run by Luminar, owners of the eponymous Savoy....

Appearance wise, main entrance is to be restored as a condition of planning, and properly, unlike the cheap botch Odeon did in 1999, but the large blank brick facades on West Regent and West Nile Streets will have enormous plate glass frontages for the individual units.

thats a shame... i always liked the fact i could roll out the cinema and straight onto the bus.

Whats the deal with shutting all the city centre cinemas? These horrendous out of town multiplexes have no atmosphere whatsoever...

what next? the GFT?

I was only ever in that Odeon once, and I thought it was really tatty (was about a year ago). The UGC/Cineworld was far nicer. It was also really full of badly behaved neds at the time too. If this was an indication of how the cinema was most the time then I'm not really surprised, as this was a Saturday and it was fairly quiet (the UGC had queues out the door, and we would've missed the film we wanted to see, which is why we went there). A shame though, as with care, the building would be lovely and a nice one for a cinema. It was sad when I passed it and saw it closed too.

Everything was sticky inside as well, as if coca-cola or something had been spilled over every surfece. I had to go there only the once for similar reasons.

Don't think I've been to the Odeon since Finding Nemo. Only reason we weren't there that time was because one of the guys I was with was a video buff who claimed UGC's presentation wasn't good enough, can't remember why though.
