The stink of rotten fish on the stairs up there is enough to qualify it imho.

Rank, isn't it? Specially in this heat when they open the fire exit to get "fresh" air in.... boak!

But I was thinking more of the bar staff seen regularly exiting the gents still zipping their fly up, before pouring you a pint.

The name escapes me, but it's on the corner of Saltmarket and London Road. The year was 1960, I was 15 and just started my first job in Bremners as a glorified barra boy. My pie and pint at lunch time routine was well under way. At a table beside us was a load of jakies, one of them a mingin old dear, who slid forward on her seat and had a pish on the floor. Ah the Glasgow culture ::):

Pubs in the sixties

Postby Dexter St. Clair » Mon Aug 15, 2005 9:16 am

I think we should emphasise there were a great number of pubs in the London Road/Gallowgate area which were home to jakies or alkies as described by retired Tiger.

You would be struggling to find a modern day equivalent which is not to say they don't exist.

They started to disappear in the eighties when pubs became subject to environmental health checks. I think The White Elephant in the Gallowgate was one of the worst and one of the last to go. There are other reasons now not to drink in certain pubs in this area.

The Tollbooth Bar today is a decent pub, home to a number of Celtic supporters with folk music on Thursdays.

I was brought up in Cranhill and moved out when I went to Uni. Went back to visit my folks one weekend and faither and I decided to go for a pint in the Stepps Hotel (corner of Stepps Rd and Edinburgh Rd). Having the choice of the Public Bar, Lounge Bar or Cocktail Bar, we choose the last. The only beer was wee bottles of McEwan's Blue Label or Red Label. The carpet was about an inch deep in liquid.

Marginally better than the Dalriada 'roadhouse' though.

Stones Rehearsal

Postby Dexter St. Clair » Tue Aug 16, 2005 9:44 pm

Was it the Stepps Hotel or the Dalriada that the Stones rehearsed in before playing The Barrowland?

Dodgy pubs in Hamilton......

....Has to be the Clansman in Burnbank!!! Used to work next to it and it was a fairly mean place.

Kelvin Dock in Maryhill???

The dodgiest looking wee boozer i've been in in the last few years was the Lorenzo Amoruso Sportsbar in Boness (it was the lounge of some other pub). Well dodgy, with a distinct whiff of sectarianism!!!!

Kelvin Dock

Postby Dexter St. Clair » Fri Aug 19, 2005 7:47 am

Unless the Kelvin Dock has went down rapidly in the last couple of years it was a well run boozer although not particularly well appointed. There are worse elewhere in Maryhill Road.

hey just thought id add that theres been a few changes in the doctors bar in Kinning Park. It since been taken over by the brewery, it still has the rangers decor but is a lot quieter, not that it was mental before. Id say the worst pub in glasgow is the clachan bar just down the road major dump!

Try the Harmony across the road, that's about as friendly as Govan pubs get. The worst pub I've been in is definitely The Tall Cranes in Govan. It defies description!!

Dodgy Pubs

The Tall Cranes.....jeeeeees.......i forgot about that one. It is by far the worst. I think it holds the record for the most amount of fatal stabbings in and around it, in Glasgow.

Not been brave enough but have been frequently warned about the Stadium Bar in Ibrox. Apparently the 'security' ask you if you're carrying and if you're not they give you a blade
