Bonis Cafe - Clarkston

Postby Glasgow Girl » Sun Mar 24, 2002 1:39 pm

This place NEEDS to be photographed!! It is caught ina 1950/60s time warp!! The fixtures and fittings are all original...the coffee machines and ice cream machines are antique...and the toilets still have the "spend a penny " mechanisms on the doors...And i swear the owners must be from that time too! Bonis can be found in Clarkston...I doubt it'll be there for too much longer. Quite unique!

:D HEY THERE
Ive been in that very place...quite impressive, its hard to imagine why it was so quiet cause I was completely facinated by it. All that it missed was the old wurlitzer duke box!!

Was the framed daily mail photographs of Diana still sitting on the end of the dusty counter when you were there???

Must. go. take. pictures.

The place has a museum quality to it!

old cafes

Postby duncan » Tue Mar 23, 2004 7:02 pm

Sharon, i think you need to do a series on the classy old cafes in Glasgow. As well as Boni's, can I nominate:
University Cafe, Byres Road (my local, the takeaway does probably the best value pizzas in Glasgow)
Vald'oro - London Road (went in here for a fish tea on Sunday)
Jaconelli's - Maryhill Road near Queen's Cross Church (still got the Wurlitzer)

Well thats one for each corner of Glasgow!!! But yes, these definately need to be visited, camera in hand, i expect they will expire along with their owners. Well, Boni's probaly will anyway.

Perhaps April can bring us some Cafe culture!

They could be worked into individual walks given as they aren't exactly close together!

I can recommend the 'State Cafe' on Paisley Road West, opposite Bellahouston Park...and Castlevecci's on New Street in Paisley...
Don't dream it. Be it.

Boni's Cafe - Ha ha

Postby daddylovesbeaver » Sun Apr 11, 2004 11:08 am

This site just gets better. I think it must be Boni's that lie's halfway between my gran's house in Cathcart and my uncles in Eaglesham. I remember going in one day to get bacon rolls, and it was just around the time of The League of Gentlemen, and there was a definite Edward and Tubbs feel to the place. There were these ancient, giant chocolate boxes, and a near holographic, flaming gold effect picture of an eagle on the wall. It was absolutely dead too. It took about half an hour to make two rolls, and nobody else came in in that time. I'd almost forgotten that was there.

The Central Cafe in Saltmarket is a bit like that. Don't ever go to the toilets though!!! You have to go "down the stair" 8O 8O

Does anyone ever remember a wee fish tea place at the back of St Enochs. It was called the Cottage or something?
