"Alphabet House" by Jussi Adler-Olsen, translated from the Danish by Steve Schein.
In early 1944, two RAF pilots are sht down deep in hostile territory. Fleeing their pursuers, they manage to board a train - which is full of wounded SS troops on their way back from the Eastern Front.
Panicking, the two pilots swap places with two of the SS officers and pretend to be unconscious. But as the train nears its destination, the two realise they're being sent to the mysterious Alphabet House - a secure mental institute for high ranking officers damaged by the war.
Another sunrise with my sad captains, with who I choose to lose my mind,
And if it's all we only pass this way but once, what a perfect waste of time.
