Good decision, especially as I wouldn't have been able to make it! :)

Update time.

At this point in the restoration we are down to small and fiddly jobs so the updates are probably not so interesting but today I start with a story.

If you look back through the thread you will see that there was a request put out for a Volkswagen script badge for the rear decklid.
The problem arose when I asked Johnny to paint the best of the 2 1967 only decklids I had.
Unfortunately I wasnt paying attention when I dropped them off and missed the fact one of the decklids had holes for a badge.
Scroll forward to the first time I saw the car in the sunlight and the realisation I didnt have a badge to fit the holes and it was too late to fill up the holes on a freshly painted decklid.

So the search was on for either a Volkswagen script as fitted on US market cars or the 1200 badge the UK car would have been fitted with if specified by the first customer.

The 1200 badge is VERY rare. Would you pay more to advertise that your car was the cheapest model in the range?

So I went on ebay and the only Volkswagen script available was $40 with $25 postageShocked. Keep looking!

Then my pal Jack came up trumps with the Volkswagen script.

Image

Collected the badge and Joanne set about polishing it to within an inch of its life and the day came where we had time to try it on the car and............ It was too big.

Had we seen the part number on the back sooner we would have known the badge was for a Type 3 Squareback.

Time to look again and this time I found a seller on The Samba who had a few of the correct badges (with the correct part number) so an email was sent to see if he would be willing to post to the UK.

Reply was positive so payment was sent and the story took another twist.

The seller not only lives in Georgia, a state we visited back in March but he was only around half an hour off the route we took from Atlanta to Gatlinburg. To add insult to injury when I told him this he said we would have been more than welcome to drop in for a visit and have a look around the 300+ Volkswagens he has on his property............ Talk about missed opportunities!

That leads me to this morning when the box arrived with the postie and the badges inside are perfect;

Image

And even better on the car;

Image

Other updates on the project include the new radio ariel fitted, windscreen skooshers plumbed in and working, bonnet seal fitted and deck lid seal and lock now fitted.

This would be the end of todays epic update but Jo and myself both had a day off work today which meant we could make a start on possibly the biggest job left to be done.

Its carpet time.

After cleaning everything out of the car and hoovering up the dust it really seems a shame to cover over the shiny paint;

Image

Started with the boot floor area behind the back seat, firstly adding some sound deadening (teamwork in action here);

Image

Then carpeting over the top;

Image

The small rinkles will smoothe out a lot better with time but really happy so far. There would have been more progress but each layer needs to be glued and then left a short time to set before moving on to the next section.

Next visit I hope to get the front bulkhead, footwells and sill pieces on but the weather needs to play nice.

Please ignore the photobucket nonsence, hopefully it will be resolved at some point by the money grabbing ****ers.

The badge is now polished up and fully fitted and it looks great I think;

Imagecarpets 1 by Dave Campbell, on Flickr

Needed a buzz today so I took a leaf out of Zammo's book and reached for the glue tin .

I had to fit the headlight dip switch, being an early beetle this meant working in the footwell;

Imagecarpets 2 by Dave Campbell, on Flickr

With that in place the bulkhead carpet could go in followed by the sill carpets then footwells.
Centre tunnel carpet needed cut for the gear lever;

Imagecarpets 3 by Dave Campbell, on Flickr

Then fitted in place which involved crawling back into the footwell;

Imagecarpets 4 by Dave Campbell, on Flickr

Boot floor carpet as it looked from before;

Imagecarpets 5 by Dave Campbell, on Flickr

And with the carpet fitted to the back seat and the back rest in place;

Imagecarpets 6 by Dave Campbell, on Flickr

And then it started to look like the inside of a car with the back seat base fitted;

Imagecarpets 7 by Dave Campbell, on Flickr

Last bits of floor carpet in place, it still seems a real shame to cover up the gloss paint but its warmer and quieter with carpet;

Imagecarpets 8 by Dave Campbell, on Flickr

Followed up by the final fitting of the front seats the interior is complete;

Imagecarpets 9 by Dave Campbell, on Flickr

Its getting closer and closer to finished but still have a short list;

Fix the short circuit on the O/S headlamp
Fix the horn and horn push
Fit the fuel gauge
Fix the bonnet release cable
Fit the boot liners
Fix the drivers door glass that came out of its regulator today and will require dismantling the drivers door again........Joy.

Not a big list thankfully but a lot of patience testers.

Dave.

Cheers guys. It is now taxed and insured but I need to sort the electrical gremlins before we can go out on a test drive.

All that work you've done to be pestered by gremlins now, such a bloody shame.

It's just fascinating to watch the progress, just a shame that so many of your pics are now hidden with the fittie bucket popping up....

Gremlins are all part of the "fun" of classic cars.

Its like an old house, it will never be properly finished.

The big target is the 25th of August as that will be 50 years to the day of first registration according to the V5 so it must be done for its birthday.

Hopefully there will be a fix soon for Photobucket. I heard of this site last night fixphotobucket.com/ and gave it a try but didnt seem to be successful so may be snake oil.

What the hell is it with car electrics that always give me grief?

Today's jobs included investigating why the offside front headlamp had stopped working and wire up the horn with the new horn push on the steering wheel.

Headlamp off and predictably the sidelight blades touched together and blew the fuse.

New fuse in, sidelight works and full beam works on both headlights but dipped beam only works on nearside.

Work my way through all the connections to make sure nothing is off then check the fuse for dipped beam.

In the time the car has been sitting all the fuses and holders have formed a thin layer of corrosion and this is blocking the connection.

Clean up terminals and grimace with the dose of smugness that comes with 2 working headlamps.

Horn time. Wire up horn unit under the wing, touch bare wire at the horn push to steering column and..... Nothing.

Check connection of earth wire through the steering column and over the coupler. Fine.

Check 12 volts at the horn. Fine

Scratch head for 30 minutes trying to work out how the circuit is completed............

Under the car, find the live terminal to the outside of the steering column tube has come off so I reconnect it.

Touch wire for the horn push to the steering column and...... TOOT-TOOT. Try again to make sure..... TOOT-TOOT and one more time to annoy the neighbors TOOOOOT-TOOT-TOOOOOOOT.

Make a nice ring terminal on the end of the wire, attach to the horn push and carefully but forcefully try and make the horn push fit without breaking it or scratching the steering wheel.... Done.

Try horn one more time and..........Nothing.

I then spent 45 minutes checking everything. Nothing has come off, nothing has changed and even with the horn push off again I am getting no reaction what so ever from the horn. WHAT THE HELL HAPPENED?

I hate electrics so I stormed off in a big huff to eat a box of mini cheddars and watch the F1.

Guess I need to return to it tomorrow :-(

If that was me, I'd be hitting it with the branch of a tree by now - despite all the work put into it. I have absolutely zero patience with some issues and car electrics is one. My CRV is now over 10 years old and very reliable but the doors can easily lock with key inside and now I've always got to remember to always carry the key with me.. I can be driving and suddenly doors lock or unlock, lock, unlock - click clack going down the motorway....Grrrr

Need to find me a branch....

I had to get an engine out of the very back of the garage yesterday so it very nearly became a car show on the street outside my parents;

There have been a few updates but with photobuckets demise I still dont have a place to host the progress pics.

In the past few weeks we have;

Fitted dash grills
had a fight with the horn but we won
fitted the new steering wheel
made aluminium carpet trims
fitted kick panels
fitted seat belt brackets then seat belts
fixed the drivers window which fell out the lifter channel
and had a fight with the bonnet release cable.

Nothing gets the heart pumping more than thinking the freshly painted bonnet is never going to open again!

That brings us to this afternoon where we reached a monumental milestone, Fester hit the road for the first time.

Just incase you missed Joannes smile at driving her car again;

And then off to one of those dodgy car washes ::):

There is a pull in the brakes I need to sort and we still have to line the under bonnet area but its great to see it running down the road now.

Excuse my ignorance, what's the lever next to the handbrake?

The small lever to the left of the handbrake turns the heaters on and the small lever to the right directs the heat to come out under the back seat or through the sills to the windscreen/front footwells.
