Fester really does look superb Dave - a real credit to Ed and the crew and, of course, your good self. Looking forward to seeing this in the metal - it'll be my first HG "meet" too! :)

We have been back from our big road trip for a few weeks now but only managed to get a day on the car.

Sun visor now painted and re-fitted;

And the inside of the doors got a coat of waxoil before fitting the damp proof membrane and door cards. The red really looks good against the black;

Image

Spent a lot of time ordering parts and getting swatches from carpet companies but we are getting there.

If anybody has a VW1200 or Volkswagen script for the decklid for sale, please let us know and also looking for the plastic trims that cover the pinch welds inside the B pillars from floor to roof.

Superb!

I passed a VW Beetle convertable on the motorway the other night - it was in fair condition but what startled me was the front headlamps had been augmented by LED strip lights (vertical) right beside the main headlamps. The green colour was almost 'Green Godess' but not as good as your sleek black.

looks fantastic all the work you've done but tell 'er in doors to be careful with the doors - don't want them being scratched. :P

Jo is more cautious than me, thats why the small finish off jobs take so long.

Vertical LED strip lights sound like a strange addition. I did make a set of round "angel eyes" for the foglights I bought for 99p off ebay that I fitted to my fastback.

grooved and curved some perspex rod;

Added some electrickery;

Gathered up a few updates to post at once.

Steering wheel replacement is on the list of jobs to pretty up the inside as the nice leather wrapped Mota-Lita wheel has gone dry and the leather has split beyond repair.

Image

Lots of looking around and Joanne found a wood rimmed wheel she really liked. Listed as semi-dished and sold by the usual VW outlets there was no reason to think it wouldnt be a straight forward replacement but there turned out to be 2 problems.

First was the boss. Sold as a direct fit for a '67 Beetle, there was no doubt that it fit onto the shaft but once on there it almost completely covered the threads on the column so there was no way to fit the nut that would hold it in place;

Image

Before returning the boss we sat the wheel in place to see how it looked and this brought up the second problem, the wheel is too close to the indicator stalk so knuckles make contact when turning (I know, I have very feminine hands);

Image

So the old wheel is back on and the Mountney wheel that was purchased is on its way back to the supplier.

Other jobs completed;

Rear interior panels had the damp proof membrane and foam seal fitted to the car then clipped in place;

Image

I completely forgot to take a pic of the door panel fitted.

Next up, we went round the car and fitted all the trim clips. This is not a fun job on perfect paintwork;

Image

But once the new chrome trim is fitted the stress is worth it as it looks great;

Image

Image

Also got the glove box lid in place but cant find the latch. Deck lid spring and catch is fitted and another list of things we need to buy has been drawn up.

This weeks plan is to get a different steering wheel ordered and a carpet set on its way.

Cheers Boxer, its getting there but we keep hitting small hold ups.

Its been a week of highs and lows on the supply front meaning it will be all go if its going to make it to Biggar, the Scottish VW owners show at the end of the month.

So the Mountney wheel was returned and refunded without a problem and we found a supplier of Moto Lita wheels. The thought being if we get the same make as is already fitted we wont need to buy a new boss and the dish will be the same as the wheel thats there just now and fits.

Put an order in for a 14inch woodrim steering wheel but no sign after a week. Called them up to ask where the wheel thats paid for has got to and was told "we are just waiting to put an order in, could be a couple of weeks". Thats the sort of information that would have been useful last week so I have found a supply direct from manufacturer and they will get a call on Monday.

Carpets may be the big hold up. Going with Newton Commercial as these are whats in the fasty and the quality is spot on. Problem is they make to order and can take 4 weeks. They have said they will try and speed up the order but no promises.

The one bit of good news this week is thanks to my mate Jack we now have this;

Image

Jo will get it looking like brand new and get it on the car.

Small update time. Things are frantically being sanded, polished and cleaned within an inch of their existence but a nice package arrived today.

Moment of panic when we unwrapped it and saw a Mountney box but the Moto Lita steering wheel arrived and the quality is much better;

Image

Image

Trial fitted it on the boss to check clearance and all is good;

Image

Boss is going to get a lick of paint then we will get the wheel in place.

:-), the plaster cast comes off next week ::):

I have an update on progress.

Nice big box arrived today from Newton Commercial with the carpet kit.

Image

I used Newton Commercial carpets in the fasty so I knew they were quality but this set is even better.

The rubber edging around the heater outlets, the rubber mat for behind the pedals, the heel pads and the thickness of the under felt on the floor pieces all confirm the quality and the price wasnt the most expensive either.

Image

Image

Sadly however, due to the Golf needing MOT'd and the carpets only arriving today the car wont be making its debut at the Scottish VW owners show at Biggar this weekend.

No point getting this far and presenting it un finished.
