"Commando Country" by Stuart Allan.
I picked this up about eight years ago while I was at an exhibition in Edinburgh Castle about the history of Commandos during WWII, put it to one side to read later, and forgot about it until t'other day when I was having a bit of a clear out.
It's fascinating stuff. Until now, I'd no idea that almost a quarter of Scotland - between Oban and Inverness - was a "Protected Area" and you couldn't get in or our without a pass. This included the folk who actually lived there.
Then there's Lt. Col. "Mad" Jack Churchill (no relation to Winston) who'd stride into battle brandishing a sword.
Another sunrise with my sad captains, with who I choose to lose my mind,
And if it's all we only pass this way but once, what a perfect waste of time.
