The current renovations of the Schipka Pass site (it's being converted into a temporary park for the Commonwealth Games) have revealed a portal in the old bridge under London Road at the bottom (the former St Andrew Lane discussed on page 3 of this thread). Pic on this Twitter update:

The name Schipka pass will be gone forever now.

I wonder if anyone nicked the street sign? If so, I hope it was Bobby Pool.
Yes Bridie, you do.

In the photo, it looks like the gates have been taken off the tunnel.

I wonder if we can get in ??? 8O

In a way, it's sad that it has gone - it was always something to stimulate the eye when you were standing at the bus stop next to the Coronation chippie getting soaked in the rain.... ::):

This is now a ventilation shaft for the Glasgow Central Railway that passes underneath London Road

I was down looking at this wee park today.

If they are going to complete it for the games, they better move it !

Here you can see the Bridge/Tunnel in the distance.

An even closer view, with the date clearly visible. (1826)

If you look to the right of the arch you will see the remains of a spiral stair.

I mentioned this back on page 3 of this thread next to the old Victorian photo.

The stairs allowed access from London Road down into St. Andrew lane, below Schipka Pass.

This is looking up the stairs to London Road from the bottom of St. Andrew Lane.

I don't know if they intend to retain or renovate these stairs. Let's hope so !

This is looking down the stairs from London Road. You can see they are laying cobbles at the tunnel mouth.
