Help name this old West End Street

Postby gordymck » Sat Mar 15, 2014 1:52 pm

Hi guys,

I'm trying to do a bit of research on the old 'Glasgow and West of Scotland College of Domestic Science' or Dough School building off Woodlands Road, which is currently the University of Glasgow's St Andrews Building on Eldon Street. The building phase first got underway in 1913, and before this there was a now forgotten street or right-of-way through the site between Eldon Street and Park Avenue. This can be seen by looking at the following Ordnance Survey map from 1910:

Does anybody know the name of this street?

A more recent scene of the same location from 1984, can be seen in the link below and was taken from outside the present Old Schoolhouse pub (recently renamed from The Primary'). The Old street would have ran behind the tenements in the photo (tenements also appear north of the red highlighted line on the map), and is presently situated along the line of the St Andrews Building.

Any ideas?

Had a wee look at the 1911/12 post office directory for Glasgow, dosent shed any clues I'm afraid (it's the most recent one available on the National Library of Scotland Website

Might be worthwhile checking with the Mitchell Library for a later directory

I suspect this would be a service lane. Lansdowne Crescent, as an example, has one at the back. The west end has a lot of these rear "lanes" and quite a number have no name.

Digging back through old maps, there is a "Cliff Terrace" on the 1861 1:2500 OS map which seems to follow the path of that lane. Cliff Terrace disappears from the next edition of 1896 by which Eldon Street has been considerably realigned.

Hope this is of some help

Here's a photograph from the 1870's looking down from Park Terrace on to the area.
