More railway tunnels

Postby Bluenose » Fri Aug 22, 2003 11:58 am

I've been researching the old railway tunnels around Glasgow a bit more recently. Strange to think that you can walk from the tunnle at Gibson street right underneath Kelvingrove park and eventually exit in the currently active tunnel at SECC.

Also, tracing the lines from the old Partick Central Station, I found a tunnel that passes under Yorkhill hospital, at the and of the car park for the transport museum. I've checked through some books (Along Great Western Road etc) but can't find any info on this part of the line. Does anyone know where this tunnel emerges? I'm considering buying a powerful torch!

if its of any interest look under Bridgton station and you will find a tunnel that takes you up to Parkhead

The tunnel under Yorkhill has been blocked unfortunately. Still worth a look though. Someones had a rave in there at some point.

Done the Gibson st. tunnel many a time. Theres a way to edger along the right hand side when it turns into a pond!
How cool is that Ivy? Just think, in another hudnred years it could be covering the entire entrance to the second part of the tunnel!

By the way, has anyone noticed the sign on the wall?
It sez 'Sandyford' - So we've taken to calling it the 'Sandyford Tunnel'

Gibson Street tunnel

In that big puddle, we laid a lot of the breeze blocks up the edge. There is a pile of blocks a bit further north up the tunnel, which someone might be good enough to add. We added a couple because some of our party had only got trainers on - not a good idea really for urban exploration.

I'm not an adventurer myself, but you've got a great site here.

Perhaps this sign indeicates that you're under Sandyford Street? Certainly the tunnel between High Street and Queen Street used to (and probably still does) have indications on the wall as to what's above you.

bridgeton tunnel

Postby duncan » Sat Oct 18, 2003 9:48 am

the tunnel from Bridgeton to Parkhead is one of the more boring ones, the highlight being a burnt-out car parked almost at a right-angle to the tunnel, not far up from the Bridgeton end. quite messy/muddy, wear your boots and go on a dry day.

if you go to Bridgeton station and walk around you can't miss it. the old station platform area itself is reasonably interesting if you like that kind of thing.

The tunnel you're referring to was the Partick Central to Finnieston
section. It swung around back under the (rising) Queen Street line,
joined to the Finnieston to Kelvinbridge tunnel (junction inside the
tunnel - quite unusual in Glasgow) and emerged at the current SECC
station.

The reason this tunnel is blocked is almost certainly because part of it
is in use, and has been since 1979 when they partially reopened the
Central Station Low Level line, the so called Argyle line. To join the Queen
Street line to the new Central Line at Yorkhill, they created a grade seperated
junction by running the Westbound line up the side of the retaining wall
next to the Clydeside Expressway, but the Eastbound line takes a much
different route. They actually burrowed into the old Partick Central to
Finnieston tunnel by tunnelling a new short section. The new section is concrete
and single track only. It's very noticable when you're on an Eastbound
train.

Thats why the SECC station is such a weird layout.

so if its still in use(or some part of it) can you actually get in to see the underground junction at all? or is it blocked off.......

No idea if you can get into the entrance under Kelvin Hall. If you can it's
likely to be semi-permantly sealed where the new section burrows in. You
could walk in through the new section, but be warned - it's a new single
track concrete tunnel and I doubt they bothered to build in hide holes like
you get on the old tunnels. Plus I dont want to be seen encouraging
tresspassing :D

The Kelvinbridge to Finnieston section has been walked by many people
(not me though), and this is the part that forms the in-tunnel junction as
it reaches the site of the current SECC station.

Again, when you're on an Eastbound train coming into the SECC station,
you can very clearly see the junction area, so it isnt too far inside that
particular tunnel entrance. If you want to go in, thats up to you! I'm sure
they'll let you pay the fine in monthly installments. A better way
to see it is to try and get in at the tunnel entrance at Kelvinbridge and walk
down. This way, you'll pass under the current Queen Street line, which is
in a much-photographed deep-walled cutting. The section with the junction
is a short distance south of there.

yes, you can get into the entrance at kelvin hall. after a while, it's blocked off with earth, although there's a small pipe sticking out at the top (for ventilation?)
