Despite not being quite what you'd call the staunchest defender of GCC, I'd say that that's pretty unfair.

The council have to provide the same services year-on-year with an ever-diminishing amount of money. They (nowadays) do that pretty well, considering.

Took a wee run up to the gates today as I was passing anyway.

There is a fence across the main entrance now but the wall at the side isn't too high if anyone wants a wee wander inside..

Which private companies deliver these services in Glasgow?

Looking at those pictures, why do people do these sort of things?!??
Such a shame the state the place is in now. I have many happy memories of going there as a school kid, and absolutely loved it. It breaks my heart to see what it's been reduced to.

The original post here was asking for a photo of the lion statues that used to be at the entrance to the Zoo.
... I recently found this in one of my old albums, along with about a dozen photos of the animals. The photo was taken in July 1985. I also have a photo of some slightly mysterious steps (probably long forgotten by most people!) that descended down amongst some trees to the entrance of the zoo from Baillieston Road.

Where did the silver coloured plaque that was on the wall to right of the entrance go? It looks like it was stolen rather than removed.

The steps down to the entrance to the zoo. It was a good short-cut.

Does anyone remember the polar bear? I may be wrong but I think there used to be two of them. Maybe the other one was hiding in its den on the day this was taken. I remember seeing one of them diving from one of those blocks of stone into the water, but as time went by I think the water became filthy and the levels went down as well, and I didn't see the bear going in any more.

I also remember it as Calderpark Zoo. I could never really get used to it as being Glasgow Zoo, and kept calling it Calderpark long after the name-change. The place attracted a fair amount of visitors in its hey day. It even had a sort of medical place in a hut for anyone who had a health problem. When I was about eight in 1951, I fell and broke my collar-bone running down a steep hill in the zoo. My parents took me to that hut and the staff took care of me just fine.

Superb photos War Baby, especially of the steps - not many people would have taken a photo of them. To the right in the photo there was a natural spring that always caused the pavement at the bottom to be wet whatever the weather.

If you enlarge this photo of the pond, taken same date as above, you can just see people in the background sitting at a table, so I think the building must have been a tearoom. I was never in it myself.
