Renfrew St in the 60s

Postby myfriendstan » Mon May 13, 2013 8:59 am

Looking for some help. There was a street which ran from Renfrew St to Cowcaddens St in the early 60s. I've looked at maps of the time but the street isn't named. It was between the Thistle Hotel & RSMAD. I think. Any ideas?

Findlay Street? Doesn't run to Renfrew Street though - at least it didn't in the 1890's!

Having said that, the Post Office Directory of 1911/12 seems to suggest there was a Wellington Arcade between Cambridge Street and Hope Street - it's mentioned on that other link posted by Rabmania.

I think they pulled down the Queens Arcade and you could go through that way to Cowcaddens. Queens Arcade was paved with cobbles so it might look like a proper road. There was massive redevelopment in that area starting in the 1960s.

Does anyone know exactly when the Thistle hotel was built? The only info I have is when it changed from being the Skean Dubh to the Hospitality Inn in the mid '80s.

The hotel opened in December 1984 and was owned by Mount Charlotte Investments who owned the Skean Dhu/Hospitality Inns. In 1989 Mount Charlotte bought 33 Thistle Hotels from Scottish & Newcastle Breweries. Most of Mount Charlotte's Skean Dhu hotels were upgraded to Hospitalty Inns in 1989. Later the group changed the name of the hotel to the Thistle Hotel. By 2002 there were 55 Thistle Hotels and 37 were sold to Gamma Four Investments.
