tombro wrote:From memory, Woolworths' in Renfrew Street would pretty well have been straight across the road from the Camp Bar. There was a bus stop right outside it, serving both Corpy and Alexanders Buses as we used to often catch the Corpy 20 or Alexander's 105 from there to 'theDrum' !
I seem to remember that you could also walk right through the Woolworths' and into the next street but I can't remember the name of that street.
I also vaguely remember walking through an arcade from Suchiehall Street to Renfrew Street but these are the memories of a ten year old child who left Glasgow for Australia in December, 1960.

Bridie, the Savoy mentioned is the Savoy Theatre. See here for more information

Thanks for the info regarding the site of Woolworths. I was born long after all these things were reduced to rubble, so it's nice to be able to build up a picture about where everything was back in the day - especially as I live in Garnethill now, so I'm trying to get an idea of how the Cowcaddens area would have looked in times past.

Thanks SRB I didn't know about the Savoy Theatre. Old maps are fascinating.
Garnethill's an area I'm very familiar with - I take it you're acquainted with Streapadair's pics from the 70's i was just looking at them today again and every time I'm gobsmacked at how we took some of the old buildings for granted. The ones that are now demolished.
