That's easy, pick the proposal out of that lot that's likely to be the cheapest to build, then take all the remaining interesting bits out of it and that will be the final result. Sorry to sound like a cynic but that's what seems to happen to every grand idea that gets proposed in Glasgow.

And so I was correct, as was proved today.

Call me a cynic, but "People Power" my a**e......more like they realised they couldn't afford it and the public backlash was a convenient excuse to hide behind. The question is - how much money was wasted on architects' fees in putting together these proposals????

Only in this city......!

Where in that article does it say you were right?
"I before E, except after C" works in most cases but there are exceptions.

Och, open your eyes man:

Its organiser, Joe Docherty, said: Our cause has won out, and I have to commend Rapid Assistant for being right all along.

The one lesson that the council should take from this is that if you don't properly consult Rapid Assistant, you're going to be faced with a massive, massive backlash.
Yes Bridie, you do.

The SERIOUS point I was trying to make was:

- How much money was wasted on architects' fees in putting all those proposals together, not to mention the people's time wasted by the council itself on the whole exercise.

...all for it to get conveniently scrapped. Yet another "nearly" in this city, to add to the litany of others which Glasgow City Council (and the Corporation before it), have presided over. Tradeston Bridge - grand design by Richard Rogers - what we got was a very watered down version after we couldn't really afford to do it properly. Collegelands - another white elephant which looks to be another half finished monument in the name of regeneration.

WAS any public money spent on architects fees? Every public sector procurement process I've been involved in has meant those seeking public contracts doing so at their own expense.

Each of the shortlisted teams, ie those that presented designs, were given £5,000 with the winner getting an extra £5,000 so £35,000 in total on design team fees.

Council tax payers have forked out at least £86,287 in fees and prize money in an abortive bid to redesign George Square, Glasgow City Council has confirmed - although the true figure is likely to be in excess of £100k once officer’s time is taken into account.

I think some of the statues should still be moved or replced.. I mean some aren't relivent to Glasgow, ie English, Tory prime minister.. The founder of the police force in London and the way they have been positioned hasn't really been thought out.. More like a turf war..

Let's be honest George square is an eye soar and yeah fine bring back the grass and trees, but maybe have a think of relevant statues to Glasgow. ESP of the people who have stood and inspired people in George square over history. What about Mary Barbour, wullie gallagher Or John McLean?! of the red uprising and fighting for the rights of the people's working and living conditions.
John logie Baird, Alexander Fleming?! Great inventors
Or even celebrate some our celebrities like billy Connolly or the Brothers from acdc "Angus and Malcolm McKinnon young" kinda got a ring to it, hasn't it :).

Herald

'Matheson told the judges: This is the winning design. After they disagreed, he announced the whole project was dead'

The aborted exercise is expected to cost taxpayers up to £100,000, with all the firms who applied to revamp the square racking up about £250,000 costs.

Opposition parties last night called for the spending watchdog Audit Scotland to investigate.

Not yet but McAslan has his own Agenda. ::): Plot thickens.

Mr McAslan, who wants to salvage the project, said he wanted a public meeting to persuade Glaswegians of the scheme's merits. The London-based architect will be at the Scott monument from 2pm on Monday

A quarter of a million pounds to come up with a shit, recycled design. I highly doubt that.
A vagabond on the way.
