Anyone have any Ideas when this place finally ceased trading? perhaps your Granny bought you a pokey hat in there when you were a kid?.
Or did you buy an illicit 'single & a match' from the fag shop next door when you were a kid

If you go through the valuation rolls or the Post Office directories (both at the Mitchell), they will show when the business with that name was on the go. I once had a filthy Chinese meal in the corner shop ...

that last photo is freaking me out a bit. it looks like you've taken two photos from the same spot, but at seperate times. one the old decayed building, the other painted white with some posters stuck up. then done some clever digital manipulation. but i know that's not what you've done...

it's like a weird optical illusion

Wonderful photographs, and I'm getting homesick for the Glasgow tenement.
I'm sure there are some beautiful original features in those tenements.

A lot of folk in the west end might be surprised to know that this design of tenement was also constructed in the East End... In what is Greenhead Street in Bridgeton. These stunning buildings once stretched all the way down to and overlooked the clyde on Glasgow green, not far from Bridgeton main street.

I explored the abandoned buildings at the time in childhood, and was even then amazed at the cornice and enormously high ceilings...

This has only been visible for a couple of months. It’s on Pollokshaws road.

wouldn't it be?

:P

There aren't words to describe how much I would love to see inside there.

Perhaps someone should start a new topic entitled: Victorian Tenement Closes.

I for one would love to see the original features of many abandoned buildings like this. (the stained glass on the stairwells and the ironwork on the bannisters). Flip, i am in love with Scottish Victoriana. Does anyone have any images of such places?? I'm practically salivating.

You might notice a rogue sign above the doorway of the Cafe - 'Timber Maniacs' - this is the work of Glasgow artist Gregor Wright. Nice.

I lived in Kelvingove for years - there used to be two great junk shops, one was called 'Crofter's Attic', sold the most amazing stuff for knockdown prices. My best buy was an old 1960s jukebox for a few quid. Anyone remember it?

Has anyone noticed the shopfront on the trongate just opposite Mitchells amusements?

It is one of the buildings that are going to be pulled down.

It says "surprise" in sort of 70's writing, but underneath it says "furriers" "Leathers"

Oh and does anyone remember the "General Dealer" on London Road?

It had a big sign like General Custer?

I found some interesting information about the Kelvingrove Cafe on this page. You might, however, wish to take it with a pinch of salt...

I remember General Dealer too. Quite impressive sign art it was too. I even bought a really crappy second hand guitar out of the place!

It did indeed burn down in very suspicious circumstances, I'm guessing, around the mid 1990's. The site was cleared and it was just a big whole in the ground for a long time. Has anything been built on the site? I haven't been in that area for a while.
