Kenny now runs Static in the Argyle Market BTW...
I too started my comic-and-record-buying days in that wee back corner with AKA Books And Comics and Whiplash Records.

I remember all the kerfuffle about the dude with the sci-fi shop ( Later on ) who got caught with some very dodgy illegal gay porn under the counter.
( Not sure HOW illegal, if you catch my drift... )

I used to buy and sell Transformers in that shop!
UNCLEAN!

Wee dude called Hugh used to have a neat place too, opposite Obelist Books ( Russel = the MAN for getting hold of rare books! Sadly missed shop, that... ).
Hugh sold "art". I got a resin cast of the head from the front of Prodigy's "Music For The Jilted Generation" album.
My mate Brian got the foam Alien head from above the door.
Jammy swine...

As I recall, even before M&S began their tunnel and extension, the building had already been repaired in the late 80s/early 90s, when part of the facade was replaced after a spell of being shored up. I remember being really annoyed when M&S then seemed surprised that their tunneling had again damaged it - they tunnel under a delicate building with a history of major subsidence and are shocked that it starts to sink?? It was once again substantially repaired, this time replacing about half of the stonework in the facade, which gave it a curious patchwork appearance of old and grotty and shiny and new!

It survived until last year, when the undermining problem resurfaced again, this time manifesting itself in by the facade starting to peel away from the main body of the building!

Structural engineers condemned the whole building to demolition, with stonework from the facade being saved for unspecified future use, even though half of it was new!

The point with the Virgina Galleries, though, was that it was the interior that was unique and irreplaceable.

Glasgow City Council seem to be very fond of allowing listed buildings to either crumble beyond repair or be redeveloped with facade retention, even when the facade is the least interesting aspect of a building (see particularly the recent cases of cinemas - The Ascot in Anniesland, the Toledo/ABC in Muirend and the soon to be developed Olympia/ABC at Bridgeton Cross).

A story in the Evening Times last week reported that the council are appointing someone to inspect all 1,800 of the city's listed structures, not before time, if you ask me!

Aye, I know. He was at school with our mutual acquantance Carter. And they were both about five years above me.

Obelist moved to that wee line of shops behind the Trongate and just next to Paddy's Market. It was nowhere near as good and closed not long after opening. Mr Ben is still there.

Movie Magic, which used to be the best place to buy videos is now a pokey wee shop in the Savoy Centre. And is also nowhre near as good as it was in the Galleries.

The guy that ran Movie Magic accused me of shoplifting once and tried to have me barred. Failed, of course. And for the record, it wisnae me...

There were loads of wee shops that I wish I had taken the time to have a closer look in. Now, of course, I don't have the opportunity.

As well as housing all sorts of ... er, *interesting* shops, the Virginia Galleries had an illustrious past, as the 19C tobacco exchange for the city merchants. The wee balcony opposite the front door was where the auctioneer did his business. All this, and the story of its collapse and demolition, at

Amen to that!

I spend way too much money and time at Rat Records when they were based in the Virginia Galleries.
