The Lovat - Yoker

Postby yoker brian » Sat Sep 29, 2012 11:06 am

Considering I've lived in the area for 30 odd years , I'm ashamed to say I made my first visit to the Lovat on Thursday, to catch up with an old colleague of mine.

The pub wasnt too busy at the most there was little more than half a dozen patrons & the obligatory dug.

I have an unwritten rule about drinking too close to home , (too many people know you, too many bams trying to sell you watches/steak/dvds..) but what a welcome we had.

No more city centre or west end bars for me - stay close to home and support your local pub.

Here's a couple of postcard's from 1896-1906

This thatched roof coaching inn was a well known feature of the village of for many years, and was located next to the current Lovat Bar. The building was destroyed by fire during the first night of the Clydebank Blitz on 13 March 1941

The 3 story sandstone building was built in 1903 is the Lovat building (the top 2 floors were removed after sustaining damage on the first night of the blitz)

But who are ye in rags and rotten shoes,
You dirty-bearded, blocking up the way?

We are the Pilgrims, master; we shall go
Always a little further:

There's never been a time when your local pub needed your custom more.
I hear the people sing.

My sister managed the Lovet (for a short time) around 20 years ago. It's a 'Rovers Return' type pub; there never seems enough people use it and you wonder how it survives ..... but it does.

My niece and nephew (in law - is there such a thing?) live across from the Corryvrechan and according to them, there was an exchange between customers on Friday/Saturday night. The view from their windows was of glasses and battles being exchanged between punters who were summarily barred from the premises.

I thought the average age in the Corryvrechan was 70
