I remember the pre-Wonder days, great site for a holiday. A few relatives stayed there in 2009 and we visited them in a caravan - absolute sh***hole. Depressing, out-dated and very expensive given the options available abroad.

I remember that I collected tokens from a comic (I think it was The Eagle) that allowed a free day family pass to Butlins Ayr back in the sixties. I spent most of my time in the outdoor pool.

Cheers rabmania. I've been to Naples and posted a little bit about it on the first page of the Italy thread in the Rest of the World section (for some reason I didn't mention those Sestri Levante photos were not taken by me, sorry about that  ). As for Butlins in Ayr, I'm afraid a time machine would be required for a visit. Very occassionaly I do still have dreams set in the Beachcomber Bar and now and then if I walk into certain pubs the smell of keg beer slops does it take me back.

Reading this thread spurred me into editing together the little bit of Butlins footage from my Dads cine film.

I look about 2 or 3 years old in it so I have estimated it to be about 1979.

Enjoy.

That was ace and what a good soundtrack for it! It felt like a trip back to childhood.

What do you use for video editing?

Cheers Sharon, I really just chucked it together when I saw this thread.

I used to just use windown movie maker but it stopped working so I downloaded Video pad. It works ok but has a few irratating habits and its not quite as easy to use as movie maker.

I remember years ago my niece's nursery had a day out at Butlins Ayr and I went along to help out and I swear the place shut at lunchtime. Go for a swim? No, Shut! How about a bite to eat? No, sorry Shut! It was that bad. We were to meet the bus home at 4 pm. Everyone was on the bus and ready to go at 2.

It was a proper dump by that point.

Six years too late I know, never did think this was in Ayr (looks too small). A postcard on sale at ebay just now seems to confirm it was Minehead.

I remember it being used in filming for an ITV drama, cannae remember the name, but it was something to do with people being trapped in suspended animation in a train tunnel (with the aid of some chemical thing) whilst the rest of the country was dying and then emerging years later... not bad story, but shockingly bad acting.

It wouldnt have been an ITV kids programme called The Time Slip and a young boy and girl go through a hole in a wire fence and end up in a different eras? thats the only programme that i can remember it was shown in 1970 heres a link to info about it

That tv show was "The last train" made in 1999. I remembered Ralph Brown (Danny from Withnail and I) was in the last episode and tracked it down through the googles.
