"This office building is built right over the top of the motorway.

The bridge upon which it stands was built with the motorway in the early 1970s, but the office block was only added in the mid-1990s."

That bridge is four lanes wide, not just a footbridge. Did someone misread the plans for the continuation of Sauchiehall St? Maybe a change of plans halfway through? Or just to give some of the workers something to do while the rest caught up.

I remember the bridge before the building, it had Armco railings and everything :!: ::):

Was that 3rd bridge (the lesser one) not taken out by a high load a few years back, then demolished ????

Nah.. It's still there. It's just part of the existing footbridge over the expressway from Cheapside Street to Argyle Street.

It's an odd one though, I've never even been able to picture how they would connect these two. Perhaps there was supposed to be more Anderston Centre style hi-rise flats on this side of the motorway as well.

When I first started working in Glasgow I had one colleague who lived in Edinburgh and commuted through everyday. His geography of Glasgow was pretty poor but that didn't stop him giving directions to others in the office. His directions always but always began at "the bridge that goes nowhere" as shown above.
There is no opinion, however absurd, which men will not readily embrace as soon as they can be brought to the conviction that it is generally adopted.

The reasons for that thing even being built has always escaped me. I wonder
if it was a extraneous mark on somebody plans - apparently out Airdrie
way there's a roundabout followed immediately by another roundabout.
Local legend has it that one of them was a coffee stain on the plans...

As I recall, it was supposedly to provide continuity, a continuation of the facades of Sauchiehall Street on either side - as if doing this would somehow divert our attention away from the fact that a six lane motorway had been excavated under our feet...

Why it was never built on originally is anyone's guess - perhaps it took them 20 years to forgot about it being a silly idea to begin with, cos Christ knows it certainly wasn't that they were waiting for an absolutely first class design to come along...!

Any idea where? It wouldn't surprise me to be honest, but I might be able to confirm or deny this rumour.

This shows the reason it was built:
Image
Its the uncompleted West flank and was to have "luxury" apartments built on it. there only was a very small portion of it built.

I'm afraid not - I'm not from that neck of the woods. I'd say look out for a
roundabout that only has two ways out of it, or maybe they've since added
a third?

I doubt that it'll be true.. It's an old planners joke. People say sh!t like that round here all the time.
Might be though...

HOPES were raised today that Glasgow's infamous pedestrian bridge to nowhere' could finally provide a vital city centre link.

A charity is hoping for up to £50million in lottery funding to finally complete the half-finished bridge across the M8 motorway at Anderston...
