Would you have a pic of the exterior of Kinning Park station before demolition ? I've never found one.

Hi GK
I've added a few before and during modernisation.

Apologies for quality - I used an old Zenit SLR with Agfa 400ASA slide film and knew nothing about photography.

great pics especially the crane which lifted the subway trains up to the workshop for repair
my grandad used to take me to partick to visit his nephew on the subway and used to point out the bit where the trains were lifted up by crane as the subway was passing thru
ive kept a copy of the shields road station photo for using as a screen saver as this was the subway station nearest to my grandparents who lived at the bottom end of shields road near paisley road, it always felt a long walk back down especially if it was raining

Nice one Eddy,
These are good piccies of the system just before the end in 1977, especially the ones around the ring road construction sites. I missed all of this being down in London and only heard about it when mum phoned me.

What about the current modernisation taking place at present. You can see the original station ceiling at present in Hillhead station, as false ceiling tiles are currently removed.

Motman - I've got a favour to ask. I'm doing an OU design course, and we've got to do a "then and now" activity using a picture of a place we know well.

I get the underground from Cowcaddens every day, so it would be the perfect choice. Also, as this module is about city planning and design, I think it would be a great indicator of accelerated change imposed on a city centre. First, could I use your picture for my project? I will give you full credit, and copyright remains with you even when I post it on our (closed) student site. Secondly, if I were to take a picture of how it is today, where would be the best place to stand to be closest to where the original was taken? I wasn't born til 1980 so I can't remember old Cowcaddens at all, and I can't really recognise any landmarks.

Thank, in advance. Cracking pictures :)

EDIT: Scratch that last question. I'm thinking outside the current station entrance, slightly to the left?

There's a wee bit about the modernisation on BBC Alba 1973.

Is there anyone else out there who thinks that the 1970's refurbishment of the Subway is something of a design classic? I can't help thinking that if they make all the stations over in the new decor, that we'll lose something of real historical and aesthetic value.

I've set up this page which, if you agree, I invite you to 'like' and share.
