Kelvinhaugh Street - Car Showroom

Postby yoker brian » Mon Aug 29, 2011 10:50 am

Does anyone know whats planned to be built on the site of the old Blythswood Motor Garage at the junction of Kelvinhaugh Street and Argyle Street?

I had noticed there was hoarding up around the building over the past few weeks but when I passed by this morning the building has been levelled to the ground.

Planning ref. - 10/02183/DC

Architect - Yeoman McAlister

This proposal for student accommodation on the Argyle St/Kelvinhaugh St junction emphasises vertical window treatment to marry with neighbouring tenements.

I passed by the site the other day too and was bowled over that it was flattened. As the 'showroom' it has stood on that spot for years but I never saw anyone go in or come out of it. It became somewhat iconic and was a great landmark for directions - you get to the gushet (probably strictly speaking it isn't a gushet) but it was a focal point if folks were looking for the Barrelhouse or whatever it's called now.

Another wee Glasgow institution bites the dust..... :|

Towards the end that showroom used to have a fairly eclectic mix of vehicles for sale.
I'm sure at one stage it was only dealing in vans and at another stage only dealing in classic cars or did I imagine that?

That's a fantastic find - never seen the showroom with the tenement above it before. It was 'removed' probably before my time or when I was a babe....(still am).

I think at one time it sold 'motorhomes' or little 'tourers' but it was a novel place - surprised in some ways that Alark Crnold never bought it over....

Can anyone decipher (or recall) the name above the Kelvinhaugh St entrance?

YM architects gain consent for mixed use development in Argyle Street, Glasgow

Argyle Street as one of the main thoroughfares of Glasgow city centre combines both residential and commercial activity. Our proposal reinforces this character by making available good quality residential and retail accommodation. This is a modern addition which has been designed to engage positively with a successful street, both in terms of appearance and utility.

A simple palette of quality materials (including natural stone and natural slate) detailing and openings promote a sense of unity across the scheme. The coherent design also helps the development sit comfortably in the surrounding area, whilst acknowledging its listed neighbours, including the tenement blocks to the west and the Sandyford Henderson Memorial Church to the south.

The matching design could not have had a rounded corner to refer to the street corner and other gushets.
The building where the Goat is has this snub nose design and it does not look as good as the rounded original.
