There's already numerous memorials dotted about the place for this ship.....and if it worries you that much then you might at least show your own wee bit of respect and get the name of the Arandora Star right.

Hi there this is my first post so lets hope its a good one. I have been carrying out a little bit of research into the TA units and their addresses in Glasgow. Below is a list for 1949, I think its complete but if anyone can add to it then great. Although I am amazed that the city had so many units. My question really is, are these premises extant. I would really like to see some photos if possible - can anyone help please? The only one I have photographed, is the old Bishopsbriggs balloon depot, in the early 1980s.

Yorkhill Parade, where the hospital units were and was in it's latter years the base for the 205th General Hospital TA unit is now long gone, replaced with a blocks of flats.
He advocated for the weak against the strong, the poor against the rich and labour against capital.

Around 1950 the premises at 21 Taylor Street in Townhead were taken over and used as Glasgows first indoor tennis centre. It did not seem to last very long. I recall visiting a TA unit in I think 280? Main Street Bridgeton. They kept bren gun carriers near Shawfield Stadium. I recall going for rides on them at some kind of "open day" around 1949.

I was asking my Dad about the TA and he said he was in it from 1948-1960.
He remembered being at Taylor Street and Yorkhill Parade locations.

Dugald wrote:Glad you got a bit of a read out of my Glasgow's Day of Infamy post Graham. I had a chuckle at your wee joke about your step-grandfather's contribution to the Italian war effort by cooking for the British Army. Based on my observations of shop-window pictures, I'd guess there were in fact quite a lot of young Italian/Glaswegians who served in the British forces during the war, and I'm sure they did a good job no matter in which branch they served.

Never heard of anything about the "slamming door" warnings. At that level of danger I'd say it was high time to make a hasty retreat!

Sorry too, that I can't help you with your "woolly jumper school picture". I don't ever recall having had my picture taken at the Evacuation. ( I wish I had, then my family too, could have had great mirth at seeing me in an appearance which I'm sure must have been very much waif-like!). The likelihood of the picture-taking having something to do with the 'bombed-out' children seems a reasonable thought, since they and their family were likely to have suffered more than the normal evacuees, and entitled to a wee bit more consideration, even if it was only a picture to send home to the family. Hope someone can help you a bit more than my effort. Enjoyed your comments... and your pictures.

I have a photo of my mum taken in 1947(the back of it is date stamped january 1947 and the back of the photo is like a postcard so the photo of the girl in the school jumper being like on a postcard could mean that this was the way photos were processed back in the 1940's though i may be wrong in this
the photo of my mum was taken in a photo studio as this is what she told me i have two copies of the photo one is signed to my dad who had got a job at hawklaw radio station here in cupar which is where they settled after getting married in august 1947
hope this helps

I am 67 years old left Shawfield Army Camp approx 60 years ago, I remember walking from hut number 4 shawfield camp with my mother who was pushing some house contents to our new home number 3 Polmadie Road I was wearing a Davy Crockett hat, as we approached we were met by my father who told us to hurry he had just kicked a house door in for us to stay YES my first real house. Originally went to school in Rutherglen then to Wee bonnies, then moved to 38 Gilmour St which was a shop front house but you entered the house by a door in the close moved again to 452 Lawmoor St went to St Frances primary from there to Big Bonnies
eventually to 114 Hartstone Road Pollok.

159 Butterbiggins Road , Govanhill.

This building in Govanhill has lost part of it's signage to reveal stone carved lettering underneath.
At one side the carving probably says "1st" and at the other shows "er artillery" - I'm no expert , but that probably indicates "1st something volunteer artillery",

The carving and architecture looks like early 20th centuary to me , but the only reference I can find is later:
"According to the Glasgow Post Office Directory's listing of Territorial Army units for 1939 the 80th (Lowland) Field Regiment, Royal Artillery had its headquarters at 21 Taylor Street, Townhead, Glasgow G2.
The batteries comprising the Regiment (or at least those located in the city) were the 317th with HQ at 138 Berkeley Street, Glasgow C3 (Guns at Hotspur St. Maryhill) and 319th with HQ at 159 Butterbiggins Road, Glasgow S2 (Guns at Taylor St.) I assume that there was a 318th Battery located somewhere outside the city."

Rest of the sign has fallen off: 1st Lanarkshire Volunteer Artillery
