Tiny wee place it still is, but in 1990 it still had a 'ladies' section partitioned off from the bar with a wood and frosted glass arrangement, making the bar area about the size of a respectable dining table.

sounds like my kinda bar, i like ones like that. I also like poncy, heartless modern places too mind.

My pub knowledge of Dundee is a bit thin, I'm afraid; I was there far less often from my mid teens.

A year or so after my first legal pint, me my da and my sarcastic uncle went for a wee libation in a pub up the Hilltown (I forget the name). It actually had sawdust on the floor behind the bar, and looked unchanged from 1922. Met a one-time Scotland goalkeeper from the 1920s in there, I kid you not - a hunched up auld fella in a bunnet happily nursing a half and half. I forget his name sadly.

What got me was in both pubs, if you'd finished yer drink then other customers would pick them up while on their way to the bar. And they had open fires and no jukeboxes. Nice, it was; a wee glimpse of a passing age. I wish I'd appreciated it more, but I'm afraid I was very drunk.
All the world seems in tune on a Spring afternoon, when we're poisoning pigeons in the park.

The [demolished 2003] Smugglers Inn, Broomhouse on the A74, Xmas Eve 1971, a well known local 'underage' haunt in those days.

First pint was McEwans Export in The Springwell Inn in Waterside, just outside Kirkintilloch. I was 15 I think.
First time I was drunk in a bar was in the Isle of Man the following year. First legal pint was in a pub in Portishead, the night before one of my cousins wedding.
