Gayness, post-punk bands, or riverside bars? Either way, it didn't last long. :D

I wasn't even aware it was a gay bar. There again, having been in almost every gay bar or club in Glasgow at one time or another, the only time I ever got propositioned by a bloke was in, of all places, the Horseshoe.

Oh for a bar with the first two, with the riverside thing being a Brucey Bonus. I'm only umpteen years too late :(

I once got felt up and winked at by a bloke at a techno night, of all nights, in a packed Carling Academy, of all places.

I also got propositioned by a bloke in another non-gay establishment, though at this moment in time I forget where exactly. The only common denominator on both occasions being that I was wearing an Aphex Twin t-shirt, who I never took to be a gay icon.

Perhaps the Windowlicker video gave them the wrong impression.

Glad to see that people have such good memories! But where are all the women? I'd be interested to know where gay women socialised years ago. Most of my lesbian friends don't go out in Glasgow because it's so dire nowadays.

I find that hard to believe !
I was first on the scene late eighties and there were very few women 'out and about' then. Probably not till the late ninties did the 'lesbians' seem to appear everywhere in Glasgow.
Your friends obviously don't go to Delmonicas or the Polo then as you can't move or get to the bar on most nights and it's not because of the guys ! Quite often the women out-number the men, I better stop here before I start making sweeping stereotypical remarks

Squires, off Blythswood Square, was a lesbian bar a decade earlier than that, no?

You're talking of an era when most women did not go to bars on their own.

In my dictionary a rumour "is a currently circulating story of unverified or doubtful truth".
FACT is that in the 70s and 80s Tennents was not a gay bar in the same, almost exclusive, sense that The Duke of Wellington or Vintners were but was gay friendly and frequented by a sizeable gay crowd on a regular basis. On entering through the Byres Road doors, the right hand side was where most gays congregated. It was also obviously popular with gay students, myself being one so can personally verify the above as truth. I cannot, of course, comment on its current status.
I think if anybody could find a Gay News from the period you would find Tennents listed in the pubs section.

I used to frequent the Carnarvon Bar on St. George's Road in the early 'nineties and I remember that there was a contingent of lesbians who would meet up there on Friday nights. They would gather in and around the snug just as you came in through the door. It was quite a large group, but I don't know what other pubs in the city, if any, they went to at this time.
