my first ever pint was in the amphora bar in sauchiehall street when i was about 14 , went in to see a band called the cuban heels with a friend , they went on to be just a wee bit famous as simple minds .

Quite the reverse, in fact - Cuban Heels were the members of Johnny & the Self Abusers who didn't go on to be Simple Minds.

leave the guy alone . They sold genuine Carlsberg Export from Copenhagen in the amphora, nae wonder he's got his memory mixed up.

The Glasgow, Scotland post punk band was formed when Johnny and The Self-Abusers disbanded. John Milarkey formed The Cuban Heels and released one album and several singles, the last one in 1981. Jim Kerr and Charlie Burchill formed Simple Minds. They, of course, lasted a lot longer.

on the break up of johnny and the self abusers , who i never got to see , some of the former members formed cuban heels , while others went on to form simple minds .

it was 30 odd years ago , and i was only a pup , geez a brek .

There's no such thing as a 'tache which isn't dodgy.

1984, Elliots Bar, the Burnbrae Hotel, Bearsden.

On my second visit I got involved in a stramash and after the dust settled the bar chargehand asked if I wanted to work on the door the following weekend.

The rest is history.

My first illegal pint was in Saracen's Head on Gallowgate. I'm fairly sure it was scrumpy. I'd like to think it was scrumpy. Anyway, the venue and drink would have been recommended by other under-age pioneers.
I remember it well because my mate's young brother was with us. He must have been about 14, but tall and probably looked more legal than both of us. I'm not sure if it was the venue or the illegal drinking but the young lad was trembling and when he lifted the pint glass to take his first sup he crushed it in his hand. Obviously the pre-agreed policy of not drawing attention to ourselves went straight oot the windae.

Another venue used around the same time was the Treble Two on Abercromby St. Again because it would have been known on the grapevine as an "easy" house.

Interesting use of the word pioneer in this context. Not that I would expect you alkies to be aware of the Pioneer Total Abstinence Association of the Sacred Heart, of which i am proud to be a member.
We have 5000,000 members half of them in Ireland. One of my predecessors inadvertently invented the word Teetotal. he was announcing the name of out beloved organisation when he stumbled and stammered the total part.

There's another couple of weeks of Lent left. Do yourselves some good and give it up.
