Did you see my ball in there? It was an orange mouldmaster and disappeared in early 1971.

If the Molendinar and Camlachie burns converge and exit to the Clyde south of Mart Street I’m wondering what the outfall highlighted on the map is

Interesting - even on maps from the 1500s, the two burns converge and exit to the West of the Saltmarket, so I've got no idea what that could be. Drainage from the Green, maybe?

Where do you get such detailed maps from?

That's interesting, I read years ago that it had been made into a sewer and it stuck with me. It does often look a queer colour when I peek over to look at the open bit at Duke Street. They are great photo's and an interesting story.

I'd love to visit the underground chamber ... anyone know where the spiral staircase might be?

Am I missing something here? There seems to be a home page with nothing but a sketch?

I’ve been using to Sir James Marwick’s map of “Glasgow 1547”, to illustrate a web page to show what the Cathedral Precint may have been like before the Reformation.

According to this map, there were 4 streams flowing into the Clyde at that time.

The westmost stream which met the Clyde round about Jamaica Bridge is referred to as “Burn called Glasgw”. The Molendinar is referred to as “Burn called Moyndinar”. There are 2 streams which join it from the east, “Burn called Poldrait” and an unnamed burn at the bottom of the page, presumably the Camlachie Burn?

Aye, I've seen that map - the "Burn called Glasgw" later became the St. Enoch's Burn - it ran at the bottom of the gardens of the posh mansions on Buchanan Street. It's apparently under West Nile Street, but I've not traced it exactly. On older maps, a parish boundary wiggles down that way.

On a larger version of that map, the lowermost one is indeed marked Camlachie - or perhaps Camlawchty, I can't remember the spelling. The Poldrait doesn't seem to exist any more - at least there are no joins with the Molendinar there...

the Molly's still highlighted in parts of present day OS maps:

outfall at Hogganfield Loch

assuming it runs close to here next

assuming it's in this vicinity as well

last recorded location before outfall to the Clyde

toomse, do any of the fascinating PU prints you have show whether the Molendinar flows under either the Necropolis or the Tennents beer factory? Thanks.

It definitely doesn't flow under the Necropolis- it goes right down Wishart Street. It does seem to loop under the brewery - it's hard to measure angles and distances underground, but I'd estimate that it loops about as far as a line drawn from Hunter Street.

At the top of the loop is a blocked-off inlet - a waste outlet from the brewery?
