Best place to get free old computer equipment?

Postby kn0wledge » Tue Aug 03, 2004 10:47 pm

Anyone know where I can get old (prefferably still working) computer equipment for free? You know, stuff that's going to get junked anyway. Things like old network hardware, obsolete computers, etc. I'd be particularly interested in obsolete Macs.

Try the local councils, K. Most of them have recycling facilities. Make a trip down to one and ask the friendly, chaps at the site for a rummage...

Mac's are where my expertise lies - you'll find it hard to get junked Mac's, even the old ones can still be snapped up for a few quid. I could give you an empty power mac case, but that's about all I have going.

The reason I'm looking for an old Mac is that I'm going to run mac68k on it; a NetBSD UNIX variant. So thanks for your offer, but I would need a working one. Thanks anyway.

You're just wanting a 68k machine then? Do you need the k/b, mouse and display or just the box - if it's just the box then I could ask around a few people and see what I could do for you.

I could get a keyboard, mouse and monitor quite easily; finding the box is the hard part ;p

Let me know what sort of specs you need and I'll ask about a few people for you - I may even have something in the loft.

I just dumped an old 14" Apple display the other month there too, although a VGA display will work with the right adaptor.

Any model with the 68040 processor with floating-point unit will do. With an ethernet interface, if at all possible. That part isn't serious though. Many thanks.

Ah the one I have in the loft is a 68030, the rest are all Classics or SE's. I'll ask about and see what I can do for you!

68030 should work, actually. I was just doing some research on it.

I *may* have a IIcx in the loft but I can't remember - I'll take a look in the next few days and let you know! (Parents were 'cleaning' up there soon - just hope my Mac collection is still intact!)

Not a problem, and if I can't find anything suitable I have a mate who owns a Mac shop, he might have something about you could pick up cheap.

Kinda related to Macs.

I can fix a Rev a-d iMac with a dead video board (£200 from apple) for around £35. Which I did for my wee girl - she is a 9.2.2 user at home.

Just so you know.
