Indeed. There may well be money in misery for pawnbrokers, but at least you know how much it will be in advance without having to rake through the small print on page 13. None of yer 'Typical APR 8.7%' (read : 'If you're Baron Rothschild - the rest of you will be paying 35.6%)

There has been mention recently of a trend amongst moneyed types of using the pawnbroker as a cost-effective way of securely depositing valuables whilst they are out the country.

Hi Dexter, I was not party to any earlier discussions regarding mortgages, Loans etc or i would have commented on them. Personally i would regard the pawn as being "down there" with Loan sharks, provy cheques and Farepak. The only aspect i would highlight that make the pawn different from loan sharks, provy cheques and Farepak(which up until that last fateful year at least did seem to give it customers what they paid for) is that it has been a long established "respectable"(the forces of law and order have by and large had no issue with the conducting of this sort of poverty exploitation) means of business stretching back about 600 years. Everybody from a poor past has a pawn story.

Yeah, there was something on the news to that effect not that long ago, wealthy people buying a couple of gold Rolexes just so they could use them for collataral at the pawn etc - sounds more like PR from the industry trying to improve their image than a genuine trend.

Reminds me of the joke about the guy who goes into the pawnshop in Knightsbridge and pawns his brand new Rolls Royce for £5. Two weeks later he comes back and picks it up, paying the fiver.

"Why did you accept such a low value on your pledge?" enquires the pawnbroker

"Simple," replies the RR owner, "where else could I get two weeks' parking around here for £5?" ::):

The only experience I have with any kind of pawn was with Cash Converters a few years ago. I was quite short one week and took my guitar in (which I had bought for over £800) and I was given £50 for it for a period of two weeks. The guy I dealt with told me that if I was still short at the end of the two weeks then give him a phone and he would extend it for another two weeks and it would mean that I would owe them an extra tenner. Fair dos thought I.
Two weeks later I wasn't to bothered about keeping money aside for the guitar because I was getting paid later in the week and all it meant was an extra £10. I phoned the shop and asked to speak to 'Jim', "Sorry mate, 'Jim's' on holiday" the guy told me. I explained what I had been told and the guy said that I must've been mistaken, I had to come into the shop and pay half of the original cost PLUS the extra tenner and furthermore, as the shop was closing in half an hour I had better get there with it quick smart or I was going to lose the guitar. I tried to explain to the guy what I had been told again about just phoning and he said there was nothing he could do about it. I knew I could've borrowed the money from someone but as I was still living in Helensburgh at the time, I knew there was no way I could get into Glasgow in half an hour. I said to the guy I would be in first thing in the morning and I wanted to see the manager.
The following morning I was there for the shop opening. I went through to the managers office and he simply repeated what the guy on the phone had said the night before, basically "Tough shit mate!" On my way back out of the shop I saw my guitar on sale for £550. I saw a lawyer but he said there was nothing I could do about it. BASTARDS!!

Trust a lawyer to not suggest going in and pouring water into a load of electrical items.

Re: Raw Porn

Heard a wee true story today about a wee woman called Ella who used to use the pawn every week.

This old woman had no family and lived on her own in a wee single end flat in the east end during the 50's, she had very little money to live on and would pawn her good quality iron that she had been given as a present by a nieghbour.

Every week she would go down and pawn the iron and get a sub for several shillings, without fail she would return the ticket and return the following week again for the money loan, this went on for many years and the pawn got used to her and never ever opend the sealed box the iron was in.

one week she never returned and the pawn broker began to enquire what happend to wee Ella... turned out wee Ella had died.

The pawn broker opend the sealed box only to find that he had been had by wee ella over the years when he found that the iron in the box was in actual fact a neatly wraped red rustic brick. :D

Good on ye wee Ella.

BTW Mods why did ye change the title to Raw Porn? mistake maybe or deliberate?

Sunday Herald

Pawn shops booming in the credit crunch

WHILE MUCH of the economy braces itself for hard times, the pawnbroking sector is booming, after the chief executive of the National Pawnbrokers Association said that 96% of its members had seen increased business in the past six months.

Des Milligan said that leading pawnbroking chains Harvey and Thompson and Albemarle & Bond have shown a 10% rise in increased pledges in their year-end accounts.

He added that almost all members, including the 35 outlets in Scotland, "anticipate a further increase in the next six months".

advertisementThe number of pawn shops has been steadily increasing again after years of decline. Having fallen from 5000 in the early 20th century to around 800 thanks to improved credit terms and job security, Milligan said that there has been a 10% rise in members in the past year.

I was just about to write in say this was a free advert masquerading as Editorial when I noticed you had already noted that.
"I before E, except after C" works in most cases but there are exceptions.
