The road less travelled

Postby Ronnie » Sun Jun 27, 2004 9:49 pm

Howsabout this for a HG day out: we could cross the city (or even criss cross the city) travelling only by lanes. No main streets except to cross them from one part of a lane to another.

Now, these lanes have stories and features of their own. Off the top of my head I can think of lanes where you can see the remains of the De Luxe Theatre (an early cinema), a Charles Rennie Mackintosh building (which does not front on to any main streets) and a pottery studio.

Many lanes have the original coach houses for the mansion in front. Others have cobbled surfaces, hidden gardens and remnants of lost trades.

I quite fancy doing this soon - maybe next Saturday or Sunday.
If this takes off, could one of the mods please move it to the what's on pages, please.

You're an awful man for wanting to super-size a wee day out!
The lanes in the West End (are great for odd houses, coach houses, hidden gardens, abandoned (widescreen, expensive) tellys, garages with posh cars or motorbikes, graffiti and goddess knows what else. There's a red telephone box in the garden of a house behind me. There used to be a cabin cruiser next to it? So maybe we could do the city centre, then Park Circus area, then the West End (mainly north of Great Western Road). With tea and pee stops, of course. Would that do, Mr Greedy? Or would you be wanting a toy with your super-sized happy walk?

Well i do like the idea of doing this a great deal...but this weekend may not be so good for me.

A combination of work and other saturday currently booked stuff really rules me out. :(

I was thinking of the one up in Garnethill, but yes, there was one in Ruthven Lane. Is it not something else now?

Yes, and I hear that a guy who was kipping there didn't survive the fire.

wasn't that sulton lane, which runs off ruthven street, rather than ruthven lane, which runs of sulton street? there was a fire on ruthven lane too back in the 80s, in what i believe was a paint shop. most of the building was re-built, but because its a rebuild it means its not saved from being torn down in the next couple of years to make way for some new housing and retail units.
