Kay then... a thread devoted to those questions so often asked. If you're still a bit unsure, remember to use the preview function before hitting submit so you can correct any errors, failing that: ask a mod.

*Also, please note that anything you post in this thread may be deleted from time to time and will not count toward your total post count.

Posting Pics/pictures/images

Postby crusty_bint » Wed May 25, 2005 9:53 pm

Posting pics
First off, for ease of use, continuity, anal retentiveness and a whole host of other reasons, we suggest you keep you picture sizes to 800X600, you'll also need somewhere to host your pics (See >File Hosting<), then its time to introduce yourself to the tags. The premice is very straight-forward, simply insert the url of your hosted image between the tags, like so:

[img]http://www.wherever.com/your_pic[ /img]

Some file hosts, such as photobucket.com will give you a link to copy and paste with the tags already on, so just watch out for duplicating them. Also, photobucket resizes your images to 800X600 so you don;t have to bother with it :)

[Update, 2010]
Due to a change in the board format, the maximum size is now slightly smaller at 640 x 480.

Posting a link/url

Postby crusty_bint » Wed May 25, 2005 9:55 pm

Posting a link
Same principle, only this time using the tags: just insert your link-url between em!
Short-link: If the url you want to link to is extreeeeeeeeeemely long you can shorten it by modifying the [url] tag to read [url=] Insert the link-url after the =(equals sign) and give the link a name after the close bracket ] like so:

[url=http://wherever.com/thisgoesonforeverandeverand...]Wherever[ /url]

posting a quote/quoting/quotation

Postby crusty_bint » Wed May 25, 2005 9:55 pm

Posting a quote
This is similar to Short-linking this time using the [quote][ /quote] tags. To quote me for example, it should read:

[quote="crusty_bint"]a lot of pish[ /quote]

The way I do it is:-

{url=http://news.bbc.co.uk/2/hi/uk_news/scotland/default.stm]>Click Me<[/url9}
(change } for ] at the beginning/end)

It should give toy this:- >Click Me<

My third post there Mo:

[url=<insert url>]the text you want to appear[/url]

It's the same process as quoting someone only without the inverted commas :)

Play about with it here, I delete the posts in here from time to time anyway
here i go, it's coming for me through the trees

if you take out the ] after the equals sign it will work: the url has to be contained where the dots are [url=...] :)

so it should read (without any spaces)
[url= http://news.bbc.co.uk/1/hi/scotland/default.stm ]BBC[ /url]

::):

Just to confuse you even more, you can use a thumbnail to link to much larger images not suitable for posting on HG by using a variant of the same code:

So in the same principle as short-linking, simply replace the words with a url and img tags like so:

[url=<url of the large image>][img]<thumbnail%20url>[/img][/url]

Image

It can also be used to provide a link to who you are quoting (useful if you're quoting from another website or article etc:

[url=<source url>]Source[/url]] blah blah blah blah[/quote]
