phpBB search is....

Terrible?

I can't be alone in having the occasional bout of finger trouble, and hit Log out instead of the View Post Since Last Visit line.

When you log back in, there are of course no new posts from the last 10 seconds.

Usually, this can be overcome by using the Search option and entering the or e as the search string. This should provide a list of the most recent posts with e in them, but it doesn't work in here.

e only provides a few of the most recent posts, then a load of older stuff.

the doesn't provide any results at all.
Is it automatically filtered out of the possible words to search on.

Any thoughts?

Or a better way to find recent posts after the doddery old finger slips?

There is, i believe, a board modification that will give you a "view new posts in last 24hrs" or whatever, underneath the "...since last visit" button.

Found a workaround:

Enter th* in the search box.

Select 1 day from the dropdown list in Search previous.

Hit search and you get all the posts for the last day that contain a word beginning with th, unless the writer's being really awkward with their choice of words.

I'm guessing using "the" or "e" as the search string doesn't work as phpBB probably has some minimum string length directive that doesn't like so few characters, and using the wildcard bypasses it.

"the" is probably excluded as a stop word. common words like the,it,of,a,for etc etc are normally excluded from searches for obvious reasons. i'd guess phpbb has a 3 letter minimum, i.e. 2 letters + the * will work.
