British War Weariness and Arnhem

Re my letter in todays Herald; I thought it worth asking if any HG members know of historians or others who have covered the 'war weariness' aspect of the Brirtish later in WW2... You never know what unexepected Glasgow sources or people turn up in these kind of issues.

The only thing I would say is that at this stage of the War, (late 1944 onwards) Britain had virtually exhausted the supply of men for the Armed Forces.

I remember reading somewhere that Churchill was of the opinion that the war had to end soon. I also recall that a lot of battalions weren't reinforced and were merged together as the supply of recruits was that thin on the ground.

Operation Market Garden was a result of this. It was designed to end the War quickly before Britain ran out of soldiers.

It's not an area I know very much about at all I'm afraid.
