My street's not as pretty .. and the angle from my veranda isn't conducive to such artiness but at least it's just as snowy ...

I am now resigned to the fact that GCC have abandoned this old Springburn building . The only good point is that it is too damp to have "went on fire" as they say in Private Eye :(

Last year they announced plans to sell it to a developer. I assume that's gone for a Godwin.

Springburn Halls

"On the other corner of Keppochhill Road is one of the most interesting buildings left in Springburn, the former public halls. This red sandstone ashler building in Italian renaissance style was designed by William B Whitie and erected between 1899 and 1902. The building was paid for by the Reid family of Neilson, Reid & Co, as part of an agreement with the Corporation that the latter would fund a Winter Gardens in Springburn Park. Because of what would now be called 'plural funding' the hire fees were higher than some local residents thought reasonable, and there were efforts to organise a boycott. The hall thrived however and lived up to the inscription of 'Song: Music: Story' which, along with the city arms, is on the pediment. Also on the facade are two Greek goddesses, the one on the left holding a locomotive in her arms."

I especially like this part

"The building was paid for by the Reid family of Neilson, Reid & Co, as part of an agreement with the Corporation that the latter would fund a Winter Gardens in Springburn Park"

so thats two pieces of perfectly wonderous architecture ruined *mutters to herself*

It was the last photo I took after an hour of freezing my fingers off in the park! Thanks, but I wouldn't even have seen it if I hadn't wasted so long in the middle of the night in the first place.
