Mackerel Sky.

Easy tip for mackerel and herring identifying.

1 - Mackerel have stripes on their back (see bbc2 ident)
2 - Herring have spots

I've been doing research:

Mackerel sky = Cirrocumulus,
Mare's tail = Cirrus Uncinus,

In temperate regions the presence of these clouds is a sign of an advancing depression, bringing rain.

Does the saying imply that the sailors should take their sails down to avoid a storm or is it that they will only need small sails if the wind picks up?

Errrrrrrmmmm........ It's one of those sayings my brain trots out unasked. Then I think "Ah it's probably going to be windy". Then I forget about it, so I've no idea if it works. All those sailors can't be wrong though. Can they? Sounds as though it needs the mackerel sky AND the mares' tails. What does Cirrus Uncinus look like? Photo please!

I found this from April this year. I think the diagonal clouds in the top right hand quarter of this picture are Cirrus Uncinus (but don't quote me). And thinking back within 24h the heavens opened with avengence.

Cirrus clouds almostv always come in ahead of a change for the worse. I worked as a roadsweeper a few years back, in Cleelan', and I used to put all the weather theories to the test. I had a cracking book about weather lore that I used to carry about with me, which sadly is long gone (some hooligans ran my handcart down a hill and by the time I found it my glovebox had been raided).

The rhyme for mackerel sky went along the lines of..

Mackerel sky, Mackerel sky,
Never long wet, never long dry.

(Which is a pretty safe bet I suppose).

Some shots of trees with a quick dash of atmospheric lighting. All taken in Motherwell in the last month or two...
