Callander Railway Station. Guessing late 1930s. LMS now own the line, having taken over from the Caledonian.

Rather poor quality, I'm afraid and beyond even the mighty Photoshop's most arcane esoterica to put right, but hopefully of interest all the same. A clyde Steamer - once again almost certainly 1930s. I suspect it's either passing Kilchattan Bay on Rothesay, or it's off the coast of Largs.

A day out 1950s style. The boat - named Lobey Dosser - seems to be a permanent fixture, mounted on the beach. I suppose it was possible to sit in it while the tide came in around it. Location - again - uncertain, but I suspect Largs, Ardrossan or Stevenston.

(Photo still to be retouched/ enhanced. This'll probably go onto the FAA website too eventually, at 1600dpi - maybe as a coloured version to mimic the old tinted prints).

Another pic which is pretty well definitely Glasgow. 1930s almost certainly. Image is quite poor I'm afraid. I've sharpened, balanced and removed scratches the cheap'n'cheerful way. Hopefully it'll be of some interest.

Image

ps - I'm told that Glasgow was the first city in the UK to have large, plate-glass windows in the shops.

I think that's rather lovely, as is the notion about the windows.

Thanks LP.

There are also two other photos taken from the same spot, but showing different people (one of which is my mother which allows me to be fairly precise with a date of 1935-1937; not long before the war). Unfortunately none of them are much clearer. The names of these two girls are written on the back of this one.

Could be Cap'n. There are so few clues and it's so long ago though... I'll maybe post one of the other shots taken in the same location. There's a pillar box in that left hand side and a slightly different angle, but not much more detail.

Those two girls in the photo - they'd probably be in their 90s now. You look at them and hope that life was good to them and that things worked out well, and that they came through the war okay. God willing their grandchildren and great grandchildren are around today and maybe even on HG. Time and tide and old photos and distant, innocent, happy faces are a great bafflement, perplexing the very soul with grainy black & white imponderables.

Great picture macotheisles - did you notice the wee boy reflected in the glass, looking at the photographer yet not actually seen on the street? :)

The lane reminds me of the Trongate, at New Wynd and yes, great pictures.

Bridie... Hadn't noticed that before you mentioned that: A nice wee addition to the setting. Must have been something of a spectacle back in those days and getting one's photo taken was probably a comparatively rare event. Simpler days.

Busdriver. There's a possibilty that it's near St Enoch's Station (the G&SW main line one) so it could Trongate. The only thing I can say with certainty is that the shop on the far side of the lane sold light bulbs (amongst other things) and that there is a post box on the left: not visible in this shot, but visible in another. Not much to go on.
