Yes, all above board thank you very much.

Hermann tortoises dont need to hibernate if they are kept indoors and healthy. They can be hibernated once they get a bit older but they do not need it.

I didnt just get presented with a tortoise out of the blue, I had been planning on getting one of the hatchlings from August but my better half surprised me with a 14 month old and the breeder is a close friend so we know exactly where it came from.

Unlike a lot of folk I check the facts before i jump in.

It's illegal to trade in tortoise without a license but not illegal to own or buy one.

You should have a buyers certificate (in duplicate) with the original copy being sent to DEFRA. If the tortoise is passed to a new owner, the new owners name must be added to the certificate and that copy sent to DEFRA in order for a new copy to be sent to the new owner.

They really are clamping down on legal highs now aren't they?

As soon as I saw you pics it was my first thought, so off I went to Google and researched. What I also found interesting is that they must have an empty stomach before you start them on their hibernation, I'm learning all the time...brilliant. What size is he about just now?....Good luck with the wee fella :)

At the moment he is just under 8cm's from head to tail. I built him an enclosure last week and he is incredibly active.

After being at quite a few family and friend gatherings over Christmas I have heard 3 stories of tortoises dying when put in hibernation and at least one of them was down to the owners giving them more food to fatten them up before hand which is a huge no-no as the food rots inside them and poisons them.

How do tortoises in the wild know when to stop eating, I wonder?

When the temperature drops towards winter their metabolism slows down and they digest their food a lot slower so they eat less.

Eventually they find a quiet wee place and sleep until it warms up again.

Temperature and uva/uvb are very important to replicate and provide enough of in winter.
