Rotundas and Tunnel

Postby Comedy_Bill » Fri Jul 15, 2005 10:46 pm

Hi There.

Towards the end of 2004, a friend, Paul, and I, Bill, went to explore the Rotundas of the old Clyde tunnel! Partly for a uni project and partly for fun!

Here are the pictures we managed to get!

Sorry I havent managed to re-size them or anything!

This is a view down the man hole to the old tunnel below! It doesn't look very deep! but it took a stone a fair wee while to hit the bottom!

Thank you VERY much, (nameless workmen), who let us look at the Rotunda.
If it doesn't fit, Make it fit.

"I before E, except after C" works in most cases but there are exceptions.

great pictures, in the early 70's when me and my brother were driving our poor mother insane our dad would take us out for 'adventures'...one of which was a trip through the old tunnel. There was a string of lights, 100W bulbs about 20 feet apart right through the tunnel. We were sworn to secrecy, never to tell mum where we'd been....cause she'd go mental!

good pictures, good memories...ta.

Does the tunnel still carry pipes and is it accessible in any way?

Does anyone know anything about the second Rotunda the other side of the river?

Yes, the tunnel still carries a 3 to 4 foot bore high pressure water main. The only access to the tunnel is via the left hand door on the river side of the south rotunda. But before you get your hopes up for a little visit, forget it. The door is very very heavily secured and big locks and thick steal. The only evidence of this being the access door is a scottish water sticker over the top of the frame somewhere. Even if you got into the empty south rotunda, you still can't gain access to the staircase since they built a wall round the inside of the door.

South Rotunda is empty and currently available to lease or buy

North Rotunda is very much active with a chinese/taiwan/cantonese restaurant taking up the basement, ground and first floor and the Gala Rotuna Casino on the 2nd and 3rd. The casino bar is on the 3rd floor right underneath the dome and is really nice but has weird acoustics

This photo of the North Rotunda, taken in March 1977, shows the string of lights you mention.
