for general day to day photography i use lightroom its fast & easy to use. Most people can pick up basics in few hours. Cataloging & managing your photos there is no better, its fast & efficient. CS3, if feeling in artistic mood... great 1000's of option nothing like it, choice of the professionals. Draw back its bloody time consuming, has high learning curve :D

I was discussing Lightroom vs. Photoshop vs. Bridge at my uni photography club and not many people knew about or had taken the time to find out what Lightroom does, so I geeked out a bit and made a screen-capture video... Have a look if you're interested and you've got 25 mins. It's in 3 bits so you can even do it in chunks if you're busy.

I'd definitely reccommend it because all the Photoshop tools you need are right there on the side of the screen - mostly in slider form - you'll never need to go to a menu again. I mean it.

Thanks - yeah I find that when I get home from taking photos I'll only use tools that involve layers on a minority of them, so I'll do the first few adjustments in Lightroom then use the "Edit in Adobe Photoshop" option to export a working copy across. When you save and close your work it inserts the copy into your Lightroom library next to the original - sorry if I'm repeating myself.

As far as I know there only is one version at the moment and you get the option to upgrade for free to version 1.1* after you install it. I have a 'long-term demo version' of it and PS CS3 if you're interested... :roll:

Edit: 1.4.1 is now available as an upgrade. Thanks AlanM.

Thanks :oops: :D

I think that Matt Kloskowski (he's one of the big guys behind Lightroom) has some excellent instructional videos and he's pleasant to listen to. His 'getting started' vid is here (but don't stop there - after every video there's a "where should I go next?" link to a more advanced one) and his website is http://www.lightroomkillertips.com/.

Thanks for that Scott, very interesting. I was halfway through part three in full screen mode when the doorbell rang, when I got back to the PC you were showing photographs of buildings that looked very similar to ones that I had taken, so I went back to earlier in the video & watched it right through hoping for some tips on how I could adjust those photographs. The video ended without showing those photographs again, so I went back and watched it again with the same result. Eventually I realized that when I was away answering the door, my screensaver (which shows random photos from my files) had come on & it was my own pics I had been looking at along with your commentary. :oops: :oops: ::):

Lightroom 2.0 is now available to buy HERE

So what's new?

The short list:

* Everything that was already in the beta
* Camera support - official Olympus e420, e520, unofficial Canon 1000d, Nikon D700
* Official release of ACR 4.5
* Volume Browser in the Folders panel
* Easier way to change the folder hierarchy
* Many of the date/time bugs have been fixed
* Much improved local adjustment brush tools
* New Gradient local adjustments tool
* and much much more

It'll upgrade 1.x and 2.0 beta catalogs. Usual common sense backups apply.

Costs - new $299, upgrade $99

But this is the big one....

The DNG Profile Editor has been released as a public beta. It allows the building of complex custom profiles for use with any raw files (not just DNG). No more complaints about ACR/Lightroom's colour - it can be whatever YOU want it to be.

And what's more, new camera profiles have also been released which replicate the manufacturer's own appearance. No more 'why does Lightroom mess up my photos' - the profiles are an excellent match.

ACR 4.5 Mac: http://www.adobe.com/support/downloads/ ... ftpID=3940

and most importantly.... the trial! https://www.adobe.com/cfusion/tdrc/inde ... _lightroom
