The Library of Congress holds the copyright and took photography seriously long before we did. SCRAN's budget wouldn't cover their DoNut bill.

Write to Linda for increased taxes to free up copyright.

These beautiful, historic pictures from the Library represent materials for which the Library is not the intellectual property owner. Flickr is working with the Library of Congress to provide an appropriate statement for these materials. It's called "no known copyright restrictions."

Hopefully, this pilot can be used as a model that other cultural institutions would pick up, to share and redistribute the myriad collections held by cultural heritage institutions all over the world.

i dont believe they put copyrighted images in their flickr page

Harry Benson
Harry Benson – A photographer's journey

Start Date : Friday 30 May 2008

End Date : Sunday 14 September 2008

This exciting homecoming exhibition includes intimate photographs from the 60-year career of Harry Benson, the internationally renowned photographer from Glasgow.

Harry Benson's career is a roll-call of contemporary history and culture, and some of his images have achieved icon status.

Benson arrived in America with the Beatles in 1964. He has photographed every American president since Dwight D Eisenhower, was just feet from away from Bobby Kennedy when he was assassinated, and was in the room with Richard Nixon when he resigned.

On display are a range of images of world leaders and events; icons of fashion, music and film; and Scottish and American athletes. There are also images from his recent book Harry Benson's Glasgow.

Harry Benson works for many high-profile magazines, including Life, Vanity Fair, Architectural Digest and the Sunday Times Magazine.

Went to see the Harry Benson Exhibition at Kelvingrove yesterday.

It's really good. Fabulous photographs - some a bit too staged seeming for my taste, but many not.

Kelvingrove is looking well too - I've not been there for years. I'm definitely going to go back soon for a longer look round the art gallery.

I'm not liking where they've got the Dali now. Did it not used to be at the top of a flight of stairs, dramatically staring out? (Or am I remembering it wrongly). It's sort of stuck in a corner now. Still, at least it's better in Kelvingrove than in that dreadful museum at the Cathedral. It looked so wrong there.

The Harry Benson one's a bit of a puzzler. His early stuff's tremendous, and some of his more recent work (the one of Dubya springs to mind) is also excellent. Then you get to ones like the portrait of Elaine C. Smith, and the shot of some people sitting in a pub, and you ask yourself what the hell they're doing hanging up in a gallery, instead of sitting in a bin. It's only four or five pics out of dozens on display, but they're really dreadful.

I have to agree. I waited ages to find time to go and then wished I hadn't bothered.
