These are pretty astounding. Colour photos from Tsarist Russia (there are links back to the LOC for each one in the link below).

“Russia in colour a century ago

With images from southern and central Russia in the news lately due to extensive wildfires, I thought it would be interesting to look back in time with this extraordinary collection of color photographs taken between 1909 and 1912. In those years, photographer Sergei Mikhailovich Prokudin-Gorskii (1863-1944) undertook a photographic survey of the Russian Empire with the support of Tsar Nicholas II. He used a specialized camera to capture three black and white images in fairly quick succession, using red, green and blue filters, allowing them to later be recombined and projected with filtered lanterns to show near true color images. The high quality of the images, combined with the bright colors, make it difficult for viewers to believe that they are looking 100 years back in time - when these photographs were taken, neither the Russian Revolution nor World War I had yet begun. Collected here are a few of the hundreds of color images made available by the Library of Congress, which purchased the original glass plates back in 1948”

Seconded.

Superb stuff and very thought provoking as to the "How" aspects of the shots.

Excellent.

Just what I thought, but having read through some of the PDF links on his website, he says he's not letting on. Strange how some of the images are out of focus in places - I thought he might have printed them on paper that wasn't entirely flat, but he did say it's all done in the camera. Is he using non-standard lenses and filters, then?

Whatever, they're excellent and a good distraction for ten minutes or so.

I think he might be using a tilt/shift lens for a lot of them.... Could be wrong though.

Nice to see the old HG crowd out for the day. Josef and HH in the front of course and Fossil with the flashy shirt at the back.
"I before E, except after C" works in most cases but there are exceptions.

Indeed. And they correct information when mistakes are pointed out by members of the public. Take note the Mitchell.

They're running a series of photos of Bebop-era Jazzers at the moment, many of whom I confess I had never heard of despite being a firm fan of that period (the original Punk Rock, IMO). I particularly like this one of Erroll Garner.
