Ice Cream Vans

Postby DickyHart » Sat Jan 30, 2010 2:16 am

Glasgow used to have loads of ice cream vans that went around the schemes. not very many do these days unfortunatly.

The two companys that had vans that came round our way in Balornock was:

Marchetti (blue and purple vans)
Viking (black and white vans)

what ones drove around where you lived?
Is this gonna be a standup fight, sir, or another bughunt?

My ex-missus used to work on a Marchetti van. (This was pre bullet-proof vest era, of course!!)

Did you take her out as they say.
"I before E, except after C" works in most cases but there are exceptions.

My Grandpa was Samuel Jaconelli and ran a fleet of ice cream vans in Johnston, Paisley, Linwood and Elderslie up until about1988 when he passed away and I believe most of the vans were taken over by Parducci.

Sadly I dont have a picture of one of the vans to hand but they were all orange and white as far as I can remember.

Thats a great achievement and a good piece of history. Do your family own Jaconelli's chippy and cafe in Maryhill?

My uncle ran an ice-cream van in Springboig for years in the late 60's early 70's.... there were ice cream van route wars back then haha. He parked the van at the State Cash & Carry in Shettleston. Ohhh the memories..

Not connected to the Maryhill Jaconelli's. His cafe was the Kit-kat cafe in Johnston.

Long time ago when I lived in Kings Park the ice cream came round with a horse drawn cart and his tub of ice cream kept cold with carbon dioxide ice. Circa 1948, painted yellow and I think his supplier/company was around Rutherglen. Around that time there was a m/cycle combination for a while selling from the side car and from memory it was probably an exMOD machine. Now they were happy days.

In Blairdardie in the 60s and 70s we were ably served by De Marcos.

Tony drove the van and dished up the goodies usually helped by his daughter. Lovely bloke Tony and I can still remember the van's jingle.
Whaddya mean, keep down? Why, they couldn't hit an elephant from this dist-
