I'll pass on that, I think...

Given that things spontaneously self-destruct in here anyway, that would certainly be tempting Providence. 8O

I had a look in my Dads workshop (Cathcart locomotive and carriage works) over the weekend to see what he was working on.

As well as finishing off a full rake of scratch built TPO coaches for his own 00 layout he is well into this 0 guage Duchess.

Stunning models mate, especially given the scale. Much kudos to your dad for that.

My dad was into slightly bigger scale stuff ~ 3-inch gauge locos and, 1:32 scale (IIRC) steam lorry too. I think his crowning glory was his model of a Royal Scot class loco and tender called the Royal Engineer; a model he chose because of serving in the Royal Engineers for his National Service.

These photo's were taken in something of a hurry, so aren't very good at all, but you get the idea.

The photo's were because I had to sell them, so they're no longer in my possession. This one, though, is what my dad was working on before he died. It wouldn't take too much to finish I don't think, but I have little interest and absolutely NO skills to do so. This one's called the Firefly.

All of these locos either have, or can, run under steam. My mum has several pictures of my dad running the 'Engineer at a meeting of his Model Railway/Engineering club some years ago.

These pics kinda bring back how much I miss him.

Utterly, utterly breathtaking ... as a hot tempered individual I can only sit in abject wonder at the patience involved in putting things like thon together.

For reasons that escape me totally, I haven't looked at this thread since I posted the pics!

GK, Bridge, Doorstop - I can't speak for BTJ's dad, but in my own dads' case he made every single piece on the lorry and locos himself, apart from the wheels - although even they had to be machined smooth and properly balanced!

The boilers also have to be "proofed" (don't know, before you ask) and pressure tested, the certificate for which lasts 5 years and must be shown to organisers etc if wishing to run your loco at an event (for insurance purposes, I believe).

Lastly, all the painting, incuding much of the pinstriping, he did himself - only the very fine lines and the numbers/lettering are laser-cut, one-off decals.

I love the wee details - far too much patience required for me to ever make something like this, but they're very impressive...

What's this? A signalman growing vegetables? That must be Grampfer Doon.

I didn't go in the end. I was rather afraid I'd see something I'd have to buy and I need to save my pennies right now.

Yes, it's become a much more expensive hobby than it was when I was a kid :)
