Is this a peregrine falcon then? Certainly not a buzzard - it didn't look like one and seemed to be smaller.

Come on you HG twitchers - what kind of raptor is it?

Kestrel, I'd say.

Are you sure?

I googled a few raptors for images and I didn't think it looked like a kestrel (though I wasn't convinced it looked like a PF either).

Kestrel was my immediate thought too, and female at that. The main identifier for me is the dark tear-stains under the eyes, and the overall brown-ness of the colouration. The male would have a bluer head and more reddish upper wings/body.

Nice capture though Steve - where did you see it?

Ok, looks like you're bang on then :)

The two pictures could be of the same bird. Shows you what I know ::):

It was hovering over the field on the other side of the railway line from my house (same location as the poorer picture I posted previously in this thread).

I tried to photograph it while it was hovering but it suddenly swooped to the left just as I got it in the view finder. I thought I had missed my chance but it landed on one of the supports for the railway power lines.

I took these photos earlier this evening after being lucky enough to spot the beautiful subject when I glanced out of my kitchen window.

This bird was clearly different in both appearance and size (was noticeably bigger) than the kestrel that I included photos of previously in this thread; I'm pretty sure this fine looking specimen is a buzzard. I've seen this bird (well maybe not THIS bird, but certainly this type of bird) with increasing regularity over the last few weeks; something to do with changes in the weather/season and a resulting increase in available prey perhaps??

It's quite hard to get a decent photo of it in flight so I'm going to try to film it next time so I can upload it to YouTube (and provide a link of course).

Nice one GS, although I think it's a scraggy specimen- sign of a hard winter?
