Imagine going out to the van in the '70s and asking for a packet of Squirrel Nut Zippers and a Chelsea Whopper.

Chewing gum machines you dont see these days, used to see the Beech nut ones mostly, didnt see many of the Wrigleys.

Used to be a Nestle chocolate bar vending machine in Copland rd subway station ( Now Ibrox), some days it would give out extra bars of chocolate once you put your sixpence in depending on the way you pulled the drawer. :D

Don't know about the rest of you but back in the day when someone threw me thruppence or sixpence my preferred method of gorging on cheap sweeties was chocolate(?) first MB etc, bright coloured next - refreshers, lovehearts and always last - the bubble gum. I once threw up bright pink illuminated vomit at Saracen X - I stood back afterwards to admire the colour.

Golly didn't realise how old beech nut chewing gum was. This was the wrapper from my era

In my later years my treat was the cadburys black forest bar, maaaan this bar was the business, the taste of the cherry flavour mixed with raisin was the best, and when it was in the foil wraper, it didnt taste the same after they started to seal the choc bar from both ends, it somehow took the goodness away from it or they'd changed the recipe. :P

All these bigger bars have lovely exotic tastes, i feel a binge coming on !! :P

Unrelated but whilst on the subject of confectionery I reflected on how much a Barrs bottle deposit has gone up, and how amazingly it has roughly kept pace with the cost of a tube of Polo mints. Everytime the ice cream van came round as a kid, if you had a Barrs bottle you could always buy a pack of Polos with it. In my earliest recollection it was 8p back in the early 1980s, today it is 30p.

If you could find one or two bottles you could trade up to a Mars bar or a Twix!

I presume Glickman's isn't owned by that family any longer....or is it?
He advocated for the weak against the strong, the poor against the rich and labour against capital.
