Help Please 59 Union Street Glasgow

Postby dmf » Wed Feb 18, 2009 7:17 pm

Does anyone know what was at 59 Union Street in Glasgow circa 1916?

I think it may have been a hotel.

According to the Virtual Mitchell, it was in 1938... don't see any earlier photos though. Quite liking that street for past/present

Post Office Directory:
1852/3:
Wilson, Walter, merchant.
Laing, David, veterinary surgeon.
Hunt, Mrs.
Ross, Andrew M., of D. $ A. R< ss.

1863/64
Hunt, Mrs., lodgings. _
Taylor's Temperance hotel.
Fraser, Peter, clothier.
Murray, D. A. B., agent.
Guthrie & Borland, factors.

The Directories of [b]1893/4,1903/4 & 1933/34 Show Duncan's Temperance Hotel at no.59. I suppose it remained so at least until Ally's 1938 photos.

AFAIK there's been a hotel at that site since Grahamston time, what is now Rennie Makintosh Hotel, previously Duncans Hotel. It is one of only two buildings from Grahamston that still exist today - the other being The Grant Arms on Argyle Street. Would recommend getting a hold of Grahamston book.

I loved Fergusons. Used to go to the tea room there with my mum. Why did it close down?
