Fossil hunting around Glasgow

Does anyone know any old quarries or other places around Glasgow where you can go and look for fossils?

I don't know the location , but a guy I used to know got me a large block of rock with some lovely Crinoid fossils from a quarry in the Glasgow area. Worse than useless for your quest , but they are out there :? .

A bit further afield , I found a few nice specimens on a hill near Abington services while searching for a holy well associated with Merlin.

Howdy,

For fossils, I think your best looking for sedimentary beds - sandstone and the like.

Giffnock had a sandstone quarry, possibly behind the police station off Fenwick Road. The only other quarries I can think of are Loanhead, follow the Malcolm wagons, and Boyleston Quarry, next to the Fereneze Golf Course in Barrhead.

If you're off searching this weekend I'd advise liberal usage of thermals. :D

Ronnie,

One of the best places is just behind Lennoxtown. Go up the Crow Road, past the golf course car park and you go round some 'S' bends. There is a lane to your right hand side, ignore it and continue until about to negotiate a left hand bend. Just on your right is a small lay by which leads to a mobile telephone mast installation. Park up in that small lane and walk to the side of the mast. There is a path which runs alongside but above the golf course. After about a couple of hundreds yards, you will find yourself in countryside which is full of grassy mounds. I believe this is the scrap heaps of some ancient mining in the area. The rocks found here are limestone and are full of insect and seashell fossils. I used to take my daughter here years ago when she was interested in fossils at school.

Good hunting

Could we maybe have it on a Saturday as I always have things to do on Sundays? (except 28th March - Holland V Scotland :D )

We could maybe combine it with a wee look around Lennox Castle, as they are only about a mile apart as the crow flies? ( I was at the Castle yesterday and the views were terrific, but the building looks so sad after the recent collapses)

Possibly get the 75 to Clachan of Campsie, walk to the quarry via footpath to Lennoxtown, then back via Lennox Castle, or catch bus at Lennoxtown, etc, etc?

Sounds like a plan ... what's the best dates for people (in March, I can only do Saturday 21, and Munroman is evidently playing football on the 28th)?

Football on the 28th - It depends if George Burley picks me- he hasn't yet! ::):

How about if we are talking about March, and as Ronnie's question kind of instigated things, trying to fit round the 21st of March?
